During the latter part of the 2020 election campaign season, there were several instances where then-Democratic presidential nominee Joe Biden and his vice presidential running mate Kamala Harris “mistakenly” referred to Harris as the next president.
In the year+ since they took the oath of office, there have been several more instances where the “flub” has been made – primarily by Joe Biden, like one from December 2021 during a commencement speech in South Carolina where Biden called Harris “President Harris.” He did the same thing a few weeks later.
But the most recent one came from First Lady Jill Biden, and it happened during a Black History Month event that took place at the White House on Monday.
Mrs. Biden was praising Harris and talking about how her election as the first female/black vice president shouldn’t be the last time that happens. But as President Biden was sitting just a few feet away from his wife and right next to Harris, Jill Biden proceeded to introduce the Vice President as … “the President.”
“As many of you know, our Vice President’s historic path to the White House began before she could even walk, marching with her parents in the Civil Rights movement, or at least being pushed in a stroller,” Biden told the crowd in attendance as though a toddler would have any idea what they wanted to be when they grew up.
“She is a partner to Joe, especially on issues like voting rights, and is proud to be the first, but not the last,” Biden proclaimed before calling Harris “the President of the United …,” correcting herself almost immediately as Joe Biden turned to look at Harris while Jill Biden and the rest of the room erupted in what sounded like nervous laughter.

Oops.
Other notable instances where this “oopsie” happened include when Harris characterized a potential Biden administration in 2020 as the “Harris administration,” and then there was another one around the same time where Biden used the term “Harris-Biden administration.” In December 2020, Biden called Harris the “president-elect.”
The 2020 “flubs” came at a time of rampant talk as to whether or not Biden, who at 78 years old at the time of his inauguration became the oldest president to be sworn into office in American history, would either only serve one term in office or would step down at some point midway through. The speculation ran parallel to the discussions and debates that had been taking place in the public sphere for the entirety of Biden’s campaign regarding his mental fitness to serve as president.
As for Jill Biden’s “faux pas,” it could not have come at a worse time for either Biden or Harris, as their polling numbers are at basement levels as a growing number of Americans view their first year as a failure. While talk of Biden’s mental acuity seems to have abated, at least for the time being, the rumor-mill is still swirling about whether Biden will make this a one-term deal, which would open the pathway for Harris to run in 2024.
The most recent polling shows that if Donald Trump were to run for election again, he’d easily best Biden, Harris, and his 2016 Democratic opponent Hillary Clinton.
That, of course, assumes that either Biden or Harris would even make it to the general election. At this rate, it’s conceivable that either one of them could be primaried, but only time will tell. Stay tuned…
