It’s no coincidence that I’m reporting on New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio on the same day I wrote about Chicago Mayor Lori Lightfoot because, remarkably, the stupidity with these two prominent Democrats usually happens around the same time.
Lightfoot made headlines today by essentially saying the quiet part out loud about how she was not quite ready to trust the science on the CDC’s updated guidelines for fully vaccinated individuals because she believes a coronavirus outbreak could be just around the corner if people don’t continue “to follow the public health guidance that has gotten us this far.”
Though ridiculous, her remarks still did not eclipse an idiotic stunt Mayor de Blasio pulled late last week that should have gotten more attention but didn’t.
During his daily coronavirus report Thursday, the Mayor of the major U.S. city hit harder than any other in America in the early days of the pandemic tried to sell people on getting vaccinated by touting the city’s partnership with Shake Shack and how residents could get a free burger and fries with a vaccination:
“Free fries when you get vaccinated? I got vaccinated. You’re saying I could get these delicious fries? Wait a minute, that there’s also a burger element to this?” he said, snacking on fries and waving a half-wrapped burger during his daily COVID-19 update.
“I want you to look at this and think about β again, some people love hamburgers, some don’t, and we want to respect all ways of life β but if this is appealing to you, just think of this when you think of vaccinations,” he said. “Mmm, vaccinations. Mmm. I’m getting a very good feeling about vaccinations right at this moment.”
Yes, it was bad. Really bad. It’s even worse when you watch the video (note his emphasis on the “mmm”s he uses!):

The graphics used during the promotion were just further evidence of how cringe the whole thing was:

What did hold my interest, however, was the way the sign language interpreter acted during the promotion. He just might have done a better job promoting the vaccine than de Blasio:
The best thing about de Blasio's Shake Shack vaccine announcement is that the ASL interpreter had to sign all of his rambling about burgers and fries pic.twitter.com/r3sxmmkfbh

Hey, Mayor. Don’t quit your day job! Oh wait, maybe you should.
I’m not quite sure what was worse here. The confusing public health messaging that encourages people to get the vaccine by promising fast food that will make them gain weight or de Blasio putting on a cringeworthy performance that wouldn’t even earn him plaudits from the used car salesmen you see in those cheesy local car dealership commercials? Either way, it was just not a good look.
But then again that’s about par for the course for Democratic “leaders” in New York, isn’t it? These are the same people who routinely make fun of red states like mine for policy stances like the “bathroom bill,” but after the disastrous way they’ve handled their own – especially over the last year, I don’t want to hear another danged peep out of them ever again about how we handle things down south.
Not one. freakin’. peep.
