With the election being just two weeks away, Democrat Cal Cunningham simply cannot catch a break.
The embattled Senate nominee and Army Reservist has been under constant fire since news broke earlier this month of a “sexting” relationship between him and California consultant Arlene Guzman Todd, who is the wife of an Army veteran.
To make matters worse for Cunningham, just a few days after he issued a statement apologizing for his behavior, Guzman Todd confirmed with the Associated Press that the relationship went way beyond sexting as late as July, with the intimate affair being conducted out of the North Carolina home Cunningham shares with his wife and two teenage kids.
On top of all that, stories have swirled of a second mistress who, according to a former staffer on his state Senate steering committee, has been having an affair with Cunningham since 2012.
Cunningham, who is the hand-picked candidate of Sen. Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, has repeatedly dodged questions from the media on the allegations of the second affair, fueling speculation that the story posted by the former state Senate staffer is true.
It’s gotten so bad for Cunningham that he has literally become persona non grata in Democratic circles here, being bumped from fundraisers as well as skipping out on some virtual town halls:
Last week Cal Cunningham "postponed" a fundraiser w/ Sen. Duckworth following news of his extramarital affair w/ the wife of a combat veteran
This weekend, Cal was removed from a fundraiser for Dem Senate candidates
Today, he's been bumped from an in-state fundraiser😬 #NCsen pic.twitter.com/O6AiF43f5X

I wonder why @CalforNC would suddenly cancel yet another town hall he was supposed to do today. #ncpol #ncsen https://t.co/AOepuhDrrZ

In addition to that, NC Gov. Roy Cooper (D) was caught on hot mic Sunday saying some not-so-flattering things about Cunningham’s campaign to Democratic presidential nominee Joe Biden during his visit to the state.
“I think we’re gonna all get across the line. I think Cal’s gonna get across the line, too. I know that’s frustrating. We’ll get him across,” Cooper told Biden as his entourage touched down at RDU for a campaign stop in Durham.

Imagine being that guy who the governor of your state tells the presidential nominee of your party that they will have to drag across the finish line. Yikes.
In spite of what you may have heard in the mainstream press, the polls in this Senate race have tightened up considerably, with most being within the MOE with just 14 days to go:
Update: Post-affair scandal polling shows the #ncsen race between Cal Cunningham (D) and Sen. Thom Tillis (R) continuing to tighten up down the final stretch, w/ most polls being within the MOE and the WRAL/SurveyUSA poll being an outlier. #ncpol https://t.co/heDhat7NMt pic.twitter.com/LCxIRWl3yP

As of this writing, two other new polls – one from Reuters and one from East Carolina – have not yet been posted to the RCP page but they also show Tillis is closing the gap:
Three new polls out in #NCSen – all say the same thing. The more voters are exposed to @CalForNc's refusal to come clean about potentially violating the Code of Military Justice, the closer this race gets: @Reuters: Tied. @EastCarolina -1 pt race. @PostPolls -2 pt race.

As they did in 2014 in the race between Tillis and then-Sen. Kay Hagan, the political press here in NC are doing their part to help CooperCo. pull Cunningham across the finish line.
But with the Tillis campaign turning up the heat big time on the military aspect of the affair scandal (Cunningham is now under investigation by the Army Reserve), it’s anybody’s guess as to what the outcome ultimately will be.
What looked like it might be a comfortable win for Cunningham just a few weeks ago has turned into the political battle of his life. And Tillis was in a similar position before in 2014 against Hagan but ended up winning it. As I’ve said before, it looks like this one is going to be another election-night nail biter, so I’m stocking up on the popcorn as we speak.
