The Twitter world is abuzz this morning after a video tweet was posted shortly before midnight eastern time Friday night from who appears to be O.J. Simpson, who was found not guilty in October 1995 of the brutal June 1994 murders of his wife Nicole Brown and her friend Ronald Goldman in a criminal trial

In a 22 second video that looks like it was taken on a golf course, or at a beach (or both), the person who looks and sounds remarkably like the disgraced former football star smiled as he said:

“Hey, Twitter world. This is yours truly. Now coming soon to Twitter, you’ll get to read all my thoughts and opinions on just about everything.

How there’s a lot of fake O.J. accounts out there. So this one at @TheRealOJ32 is the only official one. So it should be a lot of fun.

I’ve got a little gettin’ even to do. So God bless and take care.”

As of this writing, the video has almost 2 million views, over 7,000 comments (Twitchy documented some of them here), almost 10,000 RTs and close to 27,000 likes. The account has over 103,000 followers, but does not contain the blue check mark to note that it’s an authentic/verified account.

The fact that it hasn’t been taken down by Twitter nearly 12 hours after it was started, and considering that Twitter has to be aware of it and the buzz around it, leads me to lean towards the “it’s real” camp. But we won’t know for sure unless it gets that blue check mark or unless O.J. is interviewed by a news outlet and confirms it’s him.

But assuming it is him, the ghoulish, tone-deaf aspect of all of this cannot be denied:

Guilty or not (guilty), O.J. continues to be perhaps the most tone deaf figure in all of sports. His Twitter debut comes only days after the 25th anniversary of the deaths of his ex-wife, Nicole Brown Simpson, and the young man, Ronald Goldman, who was in the worst possible place at the worst possible time.

Though Simpson was found “not guilty” in the criminal trial, he was ordered to pay $33.5 million in compensatory and punitive damages to the families of the victims in a civil trial in 1997.

Simpson has not paid a dime of it.
