Israel Moves Armor Towards Gaza as Hundreds of Rockets Are Launched by Hamas -- Iron Dome on Display Again

The street clashes between Palestinians and Israelis on Monday over the celebration of Jerusalem Day turned on Tuesday to more violent clashes between the military forces of the IDF and Hamas in Gaza.  The AP posted a story that covered much of what happened:

Israel stepped up its attacks on the Gaza Strip, flattening a high-rise building used by the Hamas militant group and killing at least three militants in their hideouts on Tuesday as Palestinian rockets rained down almost nonstop on parts of Israel.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu vowed to expand the offensive, while Gaza militants unleashed a fierce late-night barrage of rockets that set off air-raid sirens and explosions throughout the densely populated Tel Aviv metropolitan area.

Just after daybreak Wednesday, Israel unleashed dozens of airstrikes in the course of a few minutes, targeting police and security installations, witnesses said. A wall of dark gray smoke rose over Gaza City. Iyad al-Bozum, a spokesman for the Hamas-run Interior Ministry, said airstrikes destroyed the central police headquarters in Gaza City, a compound with several buildings.

Five Israelis, including three women and a child, were killed by rocket fire Tuesday and early Wednesday, and dozens of people wounded. The death toll in Gaza rose to 35 Palestinians, including 10 children, according to the Health Ministry. Over 200 people were wounded.https://redstate.com/scotthounsell/2021/05/10/israel-retaliates-for-hamas-rocket-attack-n377618

RedState covered the events in Israel starting Monday when the protests broke out in Jerusalem and elsewhere, noting the lack of any coherent response from the Biden Administration at the outbreak of the violence.

Here are some scenes from Wednesday evening.

Twitter also has videos of the Iron Dome coming into use over the nighttime skies of Tel Aviv to intercept rockets fired from Gaza.

Videos have emerged on Twitter of Israeli tanks and other armored vehicles being transported towards Gaza.

Prime Minister Netanyahu, with the Defense Minister and political rival standing next to him, announced that this campaign may be extensive and IDR reservists have been called to active duty.

In a nationally televised address, Netanyahu said that Hamas and the smaller Islamic Jihad militant groups “have paid, and I tell you here, will pay a heavy price for their aggression.”

He claimed that Israel had killed dozens of militants and inflicted heavy damage on hundreds of targets.

“This campaign will take time,” he said. “With determination, unity and strength, we will restore security to the citizens of Israel.”

He stood alongside Defense Minister Benny Gantz, a political rival, in a show of unity. “There are lots of targets lined up. This is only the beginning,” Gantz said. The military said it was activating some 5,000 reservists and sending troop reinforcements to the Gaza border.

There is no question that Hamas and Palestinian militants in Gaza feel emboldened by the fecklessness of the Biden Administration, and the perception that the Administration is seeking to renew closer relations with Iran, the religious and military patron of the terrorists. Israel is alone on the world stage at this moment, with maybe its closest supporters are some of the Sunni Arab states in the region that see an emboldened Iran as the true threat to peace and stability in the Middle East.

If there were protests in the streets of Egypt, Jordan, and Saudi Arabia over Isreal’s response to the attacks coming from Gaza, the mainstream media in the US would have certainly covered it by now.

I will update this story later today as further information becomes known.
