If we don’t end the emerging American Orwell State, Francis Fukayama and the Dead Kennedys both could be tragically correct. History may well end, and it could end with Bedtime For Democracy. What Fukayama got right is that Western governments would emerge with hegemony over the rest of the world due to their advantages in wealth, culture and technology. What he got wrong was that they would use these advantages to stifle their own citizenry through the formation of what George Orwell described as Oligarchical Collectivism.

To properly assure the uncontested hegemony of an Inner Party Elite, all information must be controlled and censored. How else can both Google and the noble, all-knowing state assure themselves that we’ll do no evil? Well, according to The Washington Post (and other officially official sources within the Ministry of Truth), we no longer need to worry about that.

The National Security Agency and the FBI are tapping directly into the central servers of nine leading U.S. Internet companies, extracting audio and video chats, photographs, e-mails, documents, and connection logs that enable analysts to track foreign targets, according to a top-secret document obtained by The Washington Post. The program, code-named PRISM, has not been made public until now. It may be the first of its kind. The NSA prides itself on stealing secrets and breaking codes, and it is accustomed to corporate partnerships that help it divert data traffic or sidestep barriers. But there has never been a Google or Facebook before, and it is unlikely that there are richer troves of valuable intelligence than the ones in Silicon Valley. Equally unusual is the way the NSA extracts what it wants, according to the document: “Collection directly from the servers of these U.S. Service Providers: Microsoft, Yahoo, Google, Facebook, PalTalk, AOL, Skype, YouTube, Apple.”

The state is now privy to everything you type on a computer. And here I thought a society so committed to the right to privacy that they believed it would justify the right for Kermit Gosnell to rip an unborn child out of the womb, would never empower it’s central authorities to play the role of Agent Smith in the interrogation scene from The Matrix.

Our dishonest, power-mad government tells us that they do this to keep us safe from terrorists. Are they protecting us from the very same terrorists that cross our borders with impunity due to our deliberately lax enforcement of our nation’s immigration laws? Do they do it to protect us from the terrorists that finance their destructive plans off of our very own welfare system?

And protecting us why, Mr. President? You just recently said you were ending the wars that these laws were so hurriedly passed to help our nation fight back in 2001? If Democracy truly demands that the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan end, why wouldn’t that same pissed-off and personified Democracy demand that you get your paranoid, tyrannical government the (&*(^&*%) out of my inbox? Or do you really believe the enemy lives abroad?

The Inner Party is like that in an Oligarchical Collectivist System. They perpetually dominate the information and use the powers of government to intimidate the next 10%. This, not Post-Revelation Rapture, is very well how we reach the state of the last man and the end of history. If such is the case, than our Patriots would rather watch Tom Brady complete a pass from the couch, than fight for our individual rights in the voting booths and out on the streets. Thus, the end of history could very well wind up being Bedtime For Democracy.
