I will freely admit that I might love the retirement of Justice Anthony Kennedy a little too much. The collective freakout from the Left over the week’s court decisions followed by the departure of one of the justices considered a swing vote has been a rare — dare I say it — treat. If only for the hyperbolic hysteria we’re witnessing.

I honestly don’t mean it in a mean-spirited way. It’s simply because as all non-populist conservatives understand, I’ve been there. It’s the worst kind of empathy. As Jane Austen wrote, “For what do we live, but to make sport for our neighbors, and laugh at them in our turn?” The deep disappointment and sense of betrayal by the Supreme Court is something conservatives know well.

When Kennedy’s retirement was announced yesterday, the Democratic National Committee’s rules committee were fortuitously on a recorded call and was posted to Twitter. The gasps and drawn out “No”‘s is exactly what you’d expect but it’s fun to listen to anyway. So, here you go:
