As the Virginia governor’s race wound down last night, the night before the election, Terry McAuliffe demonstrated for a final time why he doesn’t deserve to be elected to office.

The creepy Democratic operative told his last lie without any conscience whatsoever, throwing everything up against the wall in the attempt to win. He simply made up a Youngkin-Trump event and lied to his audience.

From Politico:

“Guess how Glenn Youngkin is finishing his campaign?” McAuliffe told a modest crowd outside a Fairfax brewery Monday night at his final rally. “He is doing an event with Donald Trump here in Virginia.”

That was a lie. Trump wasn’t in Virginia and he never campaigned with Youngkin, though he did make the case for the GOP candidate — “fantastic guy!” — during a brief “tele-rally.”

Now, obviously, that’s a lie. It’s an easily provable lie so it’s also a very stupid lie. But McAuliffe is so desperate, he’s just saying anything at this point that he thinks might hurt Youngkin, not caring even if he’s caught lying. Not a good look, to say the least. Not to mention that bringing in Trump isn’t the negative he thinks it is.

Meanwhile, as we reported, Glenn Youngkin is finishing strong with lots of parents and others out in support of him. While McAuliffe has sparse crowds at best, Youngkin has folks out in droves, energized and convinced they can win. Even Politico recognized it.

Thirty miles away, at the Loudoun County Fairgrounds, a crowd several times the size of McAuliffe’s was waiting for Youngkin to take the stage. You got a hint of why McAuliffe was desperate to manufacture the fake Trump event. While McAuliffe has boundless energy — “Sleep when you’re dead!” he likes to say — his Monday audiences in Richmond and Fairfax, where we caught up with him, were modest and listless.

Youngkin’s were large and rollicking, with many of the trappings of a MAGA rally — a similar dad rock playlist, hats and flags and T-shirts paying homage to the former president — but, to the great disappointment of Democrats, not Trump himself.

While McAuliffe is all about being negative and divisive, even making remarks about white teachers, Youngkin is about the issues that people care about including taxes, the economy, and education. His final wrap-up was something refreshing from a politician and probably a reflection that he isn’t really a politician — like swamp creature McAuliffe. It was about thanking people, humility, and service.

Would that we had more people who thought like this and understood this is about service not about holding onto power. The polls show a lot of positive momentum to Youngkin, but no doubt it’s going to be tight.

Let’s hope that sanity prevails and this really is a bellwether for sanity throughout government.
