The PGA has held a golf tournament at the former Doral Country Club (now Trump National Doral) since 1962. Until 2006 the Doral Open was held at the club, but from 2007 the Doral Blue Monster course hosted the WGC-Cadillac Championship. That golf course is now owned by Donald Trump in an election year. Given recent events, not only would Cadillac not renew for the money PGA wanted, but the PGA had a hard time finding a new sponsor.
The tournament is now moving to Mexico City. Sounds drastic, right? Why would they do that? Here’s why.
It’s understandable that the PGA would have difficulty finding a sponsor. Donald Trump is deeply unpopular, averaging a -20 net favorability rating. To sign a big contract sponsoring an event on his course would draw too much negative attention for a risk averse big business.
But even understanding that, to move the tournament to Mexico City seems crazy. But now we know why. Says the Miami Herald:
On Wednesday, the PGA announced a new sponsorship deal from Grupo Salinas, a media and financial conglomerate based in Mexico City. The deal was reportedly valued at $16 million a year, roughly double what Cadillac was willing to pay to extend its sponsorship in Doral.
Ricardo Salinas is clearly just a richer, more powerful man than Donald Trump. Salinas decided he wanted to spite Trump, and put up the money to make it happen.
Salinas leads Trump by one stroke.
