Are America's 'Would-Be Censors' Looking for New Opportunities in Europe in Aftermath of Trump's Win?

As President Donald Trump’s decisive 2024 presidential election win continues to result in mass layoffs of federal employees and contractors — via recommendations to the president from Elon Musk's Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) — America's would-be censors and so-called "fact-checkers" — appear to be looking for opportunities to take their their "talents" to Europe.

As noted, law professor and political commentator Jonathan Turley wrote in a Saturday column for The Hill that "a massive industry took root" during the Biden administration, "sweeping up billions in taxpayer funds to research, target, and combat those accused of misinformation, disinformation and 'malinformation.'”

But now, following the arrival of Team Trump and its effective dismantling of the sickness of DEI (diversity, equity, and inclusion) and perhaps more relevant here, subsequent moves by Mark Zuckerberg, CEO of Meta Corp. (formerly Facebook Corp.), to rid the mega social media company of "fact-checkers" and overt censorship, and allow free speech (I'll believe it when I see it) — and similar pledges from other Big Tech CEOs, the self-described "disinformation experts" are increasingly finding themselves up the proverbial creek without a paddle.

Here's more from Turley:

Although the exact number is uncertain, many trained censors are now facing unemployment. These self-described “disinformation experts” have become the modern equivalent of rōnin, the Japanese samurai who found themselves without a master and wandered the land looking for a new use of their skill set. They are finding precisely that calling in academia, not-for-profit groups and, most importantly, Europe.

[...]

The media lionized many in the industry as “saving democracy” by controlling, targeting and suppressing others’ political speech. Not only did federal agencies fund these efforts, but they also coordinated censorship of groups and individuals with opposing views, even objecting to jokes on the internet.

[...]

The sudden shutoff of the federal spigot comes as a blow, but it does not mean the speech warriors will simply convert their censor-shields into plowshares. Many will follow in the footsteps of Nina Jankowicz, briefly the head of a now-defunct disinformation governance board. After the outcry over the board, Jankowicz quickly found her skills were in demand in Europe.

After all, Europe continues to be a fertile field for trained censors and "disinformation experts," as attacks against free speech continue to sweep across the Continent that continues to get in its own way, just as it has done for centuries.

In an executive order titled 'RESTORING FREEDOM OF SPEECH AND ENDING FEDERAL CENSORSHIP' posted to the White House website on January 20, President Trump directed, in part:

By the authority vested in me as President by the Constitution and the laws of the United States of America, and section 301 of title 3, United States Code, it is hereby ordered as follows:

 Section 1.  Purpose.  The First Amendment to the United States Constitution, an amendment essential to the success of our Republic, enshrines the right of the American people to speak freely in the public square without Government interference.  Over the last 4 years, the previous administration trampled free speech rights by censoring Americans’ speech on online platforms, often by exerting substantial coercive pressure on third parties, such as social media companies, to moderate, deplatform, or otherwise suppress speech that the Federal Government did not approve.  Under the guise of combatting “misinformation,” “disinformation,” and “malinformation,” the Federal Government infringed on the constitutionally protected speech rights of American citizens across the United States in a manner that advanced the Government’s preferred narrative about significant matters of public debate.  Government censorship of speech is intolerable in a free society.

Sec. 2.  Policy.  It is the policy of the United States to:

    (a)  secure the right of the American people to engage in constitutionally protected speech;

     (b)  ensure that no Federal Government officer, employee, or agent engages in or facilitates any conduct that would unconstitutionally abridge the free speech of any American citizen;

     (c)  ensure that no taxpayer resources are used to engage in or facilitate any conduct that would unconstitutionally abridge the free speech of any American citizen; and

     (d)  identify and take appropriate action to correct past misconduct by the Federal Government related to censorship of protected speech.

Sec. 3.  Ending Censorship of Protected Speech.

     (a)  No Federal department, agency, entity, officer, employee, or agent may act or use any Federal resources in a manner contrary to section 2 of this order.

Turley also commented on the significance of Vice President JD Vance's speech at the annual Munich Security Conference (which was much to the chagrin of smug European leaders).

The European Union has also been ground zero for the anti-free speech movement’s aggressive use of the Digital Services Act, which bars speech that is viewed as “disinformation” or “incitement.”

When it passed over the objections of free speech advocates, European Commission Executive Vice President Margrethe Vestager was perfectly ecstatic, declaring it is “not a slogan anymore, that what is illegal offline should also be seen and dealt with as illegal online. Now, it is a real thing. Democracy’s back.”

That is why Vice President J.D. Vance’s recent speech in Munich was so historic. For the free speech community, Vance went into the belly of the beast and denounced the anti-free-speech movement in the heart of Europe.

The response to the Vance speech has been nothing short of panic in the anti-free-speech community.

I suppose "Oh, boo-hoo" isn't a professional response, but so be it.

Were it not for the strategic importance of Europe, I'd say we should allow it to intentionally do itself in, as it did twice in the 20th century — only to be saved by America.

The Bottom Line

As new hope, including a promised return to free speech, sweeps across America, let us remember that the left is not only devious; it is also insidious, and it will continue to do its damnedest in its hellbent attempt to destroy this country as we know it.
