Surgeon General Bows to Gun-Grabbing Biden, Declares 'Firearm Violence' a 'Public Health Crisis'

I hooked up with a good friend and my son on Sunday to shoot various firearms, including a couple of AR-15s and several semi-automatic handguns. During our almost three hours of shooting, I'm happy to report that at no time did any of the firearms arrayed on the table before us attempt to commit a violent crime.

This brings us to my latest ridiculous gun-grabbing report.

U.S. Surgeon General Dr. Vivek Murthy bowed to gun-grabbing Joe Biden on Tuesday and issued a new advisory declaring so-called "firearm violence" a "public health crisis." In his announcement, Murthy also called for a ban on so-called "assault weapons" and large-capacity magazines for civilian use.

Murthy said in his statement:

Firearm violence is an urgent public health crisis that has led to loss of life, unimaginable pain, and profound grief for far too many Americans.

Like clockwork, ten national medical organizations, including the American Medical Association, American Academy of Pediatrics, American College of Surgeons, American Public Health Association, and the YWCA, issued statements of support in a press release distributed by Murthy's office.

American Academy of Pediatrics President Ben Hoffman, MD, said in a statement:

Pediatricians have long understood that gun violence is a public health threat to children and that its impact on families and communities can be devastating and long-lasting.

American Public Health Association Executive Director Georges C. Benjamin, MD, added:

Gun violence is a national tragedy. It's a serious public health problem that is highly preventable.

In its report, ABC News cited selective statistics.

Gun violence is now the leading cause of death in the U.S. among kids and teens. Gun-related suicides have risen among all age groups from 2012 to 2022; the greatest rise has been among 10–14-year-olds, according to the advisory.
Rates of gun-related deaths among kids 1-19 years old in the U.S. are astronomically high and significantly higher than in other high-income countries.
Over 50% of Americans say they or their family have experienced a firearm-related incident in their lifetime, and about 60% of U.S. adults say that they worry "sometimes," "almost every day," or "every day" about a loved one being a victim of firearm violence, according to the advisory.

Ironically, ABC failed to cite its own previous report in which it correctly said the AR-15 (and other pretend "assault weapons") is not the type of firearm used in a vast majority of murders.

While semi-automatic rifles such as the AR-15 are a major flashpoint in the gun control debate and are often the focus of attention following mass shootings, there are only about 20 million assault rifles in the United States, a fraction of the estimated 400 million guns in the country. Instead, according to ABC News contributor and former FBI agent Brad Garrett, handguns account for the most gun murders in the U.S.

The "major flashpoint in the gun-control debate" is the strategy of the Democrat Party in its insidious effort to curb the Second Amendment rights of law-abiding gun owners across America while doing precious little to stop the carnage in urban America.

Murthy's advisory says the impact of "firearm violence" goes beyond deaths and injuries, including "collective trauma across society" which threatens "the mental and physical health of young people's well-being."

We don’t have to continue down this path, and we don't have to subject our children to the ongoing horror of firearm violence in America. All Americans deserve to live their lives free from firearm violence, as well as from the fear and devastation that it brings. It will take the collective commitment of our nation to turn the tide on firearm violence.

Democrat demagoguery at its best (worst).

The Bottom Line

Perhaps Surgeon General Murthy should focus on the mental health issues of shooters as much as he exploits the mental and physical health of victims and their families. Next up, he might want to look into the revolving door of non-justice in Democrat-run cities across America that leads to repeat violent offenders being released back to the streets.

Zero of the above is going to happen.

Meanwhile, I'm pleased to note that at the time of this article, none of the weapons we shot on Sunday committed "firearm violence" on Monday or so far on Tuesday.
