Even a blind squirrel occasionally finds a nut.
This week, Bill Maher is the lucky squirrel. On Friday night Maher sat down with Neera Tanden of the liberal think tank, Center for American Progress for his show Real Time on HBO. Maher is none too happy with the way Democrats are acting after the embarrassing loss by Hillary Clinton and can’t stop himself from giving them some advice.
Watch:
The two start out chatting about Hillary Clinton’s post election behavior. Specifically her odd staged “appearances”.
Real Clear Politics transcribed the interview, and it goes without saying, when Bill Maher is involved there is a “Language Warning”.
Maher said Hillary Clinton should “stay in the woods” and let a new generation and breed of Democrats take the helm of the party.
“Hillary, stay in the woods,” Maher advised. “Okay, you had your shot. You fucked it up. You’re Bill Buckner. We had the World Series and you let the grounder go through your legs, let someone else have the chance.”
“The fact that she’s coming back it just verifies every bad thing anyone’s ever thought about the Clintons, that it’s all about them. Let some of the other shorter trees get a little sunlight,” Maher said to mixed reaction from the audience.
“I don’t think it’s either-or that way,” Tanden responded. “So, I don’t think because — I hear you on the loss. It was a terrible, terrible loss but I don’t think the right response is Hillary goes into her closet and never speaks again on any issue she’s worked on for decades of her life.”
“Lots of people are speaking out,” Tanden said.
Then the host takes aim at the humorless lefts consistent need to make everything an issue. Including this week’s outrage over Bill O’Reilly’s flippant comment on Maxine Water’s Hair.
“Yeah, but what did she speak about? She spoke out because Bill O’Reilly made a joke about Maxine Waters’ hair,” Maher said.
“She spoke out against racism and sexism, Bill, that’s what she spoke out against,” Tanden said to cheers.
“She spoke out about a joke,” Maher said. “You know what, this is why the Democrats lost the election in the first place. Because they cannot get their priorities straight, and they never fail to take the bait about little bullshit issues.”
“I don’t think racism and sexism are bullshit issues,” Tanden retorted.
“Why is it racist? What is it racist? Because she compared it to black people?” Maher asked.
I’m not a fan of O’Reilly or Maher for that matter, but in this case both men are basically in the right. The Democrats are the party of “dish it out but can’t take it”. They spent weeks discussing Donald Trump’s mental health, no one was forced to apologize. Because of course not, they are Democrats. They make derogatory comments on the regular about Republicans appearance, age, and of course values. See the Mike Pence lunacy this week.
Say anything about a Democrat and they will find a way to call you a “Racist” or a “Sexist” or they’re favorite… a “Bigot”. Just don’t expect that standard to go both ways.
Another guest, Rick Santorum got into the scuffle calling the reaction “fake outrage”, and telling them to “learn to take a joke and move on”. Santorum has a point of course, with all the faux anger floating around it makes it nearly impossible to take the Democrats seriously on most of their grievances. They get mad about everything.
