TMZ Sports reported that on the eve of NBA free agency, Charolette Hornets forward Miles Bridges was arrested Wednesday night in Los Angeles on a felony domestic violence warrant.

The LAPD did not release details, but they did note that Bridges was released on a $130,000 bond. He is scheduled to appear in court on July 20. The Charlotte Hornets made a statement saying that they are aware of the horrific incident that took place.

“The Charlotte Hornets are aware of the situation involving Miles Bridges … We are in the process of gathering additional information. We will have no further comment at this time.”

Bridges, 24, was set to sign a max contract once free agency opened, as he led the team in scoring last season; however, his felony may derail that chance. If Bridges does get the max contract, it sets a bad precedent in the sports world that someone could commit domestic violence yet be rewarded for it due to their on-court performance.

“As an organization, we love Miles,” Hornets general manager Mitch Kupchak said Tuesday. “We are going to bring him back. He has been great for the franchise, and I believe, with his work ethic, he’s only going to get better.”

Kupchak made that statement before Bridges was arrested; it is unclear whether the Hornets will re-sign Bridges now. It is worth noting that Bridges changed his Twitter bio from “forward for the Charlotte Hornets” to “It’s me.”

If the Hornets or any NBA team signs Bridges to a max deal, not only will that set a bad precedent in the NBA, it will give the “OK” for athletes to think they are untouchable. Just like we saw in the NFL when then-Kansas City Chiefs, now-Miami Dolphins wide-receiver Tyreek Hill committed domestic violence — beating and choking his girlfriend in college — but he never saw any jail time, and he was investigated for child abuse as well. He is still in the NFL and gets praised for his play, but his off-field actions have been ignored for the most part.

The NBA free agency is set to begin today. It remains unclear when Bridges will sign with a team and which team will offer him the most money, but he could have fumbled the max deal with the felony domestic violence warrant. NBA owners, teams, and general managers should set an example that domestic violence should not be rewarded.
