In the wake of a red ripple, Senator Rick Scott decided to step up and challenge Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell for the position, citing the need for Republicans to be more “bold and resolute” in a letter to the GOP on Tuesday.

“I’m writing to you today because I believe it’s time for the Senate Republican Conference to be far more bold and resolute than we have been in the past. We must start saying what we are for, not just what we are against. I do not believe we can simply continue to say the Democrats are radical, which they are. Republican voters expect and deserve to know our plan to promote and advance conservative values.”

Senator Ted Cruz, R-Texas, and other senate Republicans had originally asked for the leadership election to be postponed until after the Georgia runoff, but the request was denied.

McConnell won reelection on Wednesday and is now set to become the longest-serving party leader in Senate history.

So, even though Republicans lost the most winnable senate election season in recent memory, the party sees no need to change course or regroup. Some might call that unsurprising.
