After a Thursday Redstate report on the issue, Facebook has responded to outcries over a new “program” they rolled out aimed at combatting “hate.”

The social media giant rolled out what they are calling a “test” program that flags content they feel might be “extremist” and puts out messages encouraging people to contact an organization for help leaving “extremist” groups.

The link leads to a group called Life After Hate that purports to help lead people out of “violent far-right” extremism.

At the time Redstate posted the original report Facebook had not yet responded to a request for comment. Since that time a Facebook spokesperson reached out to Redstate with a statement explaining their Thursday “test.”

This test is part of our larger work to assess ways to provide resources and support to people on Facebook who may have engaged with or were exposed to extremist content, or may know someone who is at risk. We are partnering with NGOs and academic experts in this space and hope to have more to share in the future.

Facebook has given no indication as to why they only have one side of the ideological spectrum on the “hate” flags.
