The week since the election has been an odd place to reside.
Many #NeverTrump conservatives are simultaneously rejoicing over Hillary’s defeat, but find themselves cautiously awaiting reality after the inauguration. We hope that Trump may yet prove himself to be a solid conservative once his administration begins.
Conversely, the Left is looking at one of their former members (he was a lifelong New York liberal, after all) and seething. Not only does it appear that he’s betrayed their once-shared ideology, but in doing so has bulldozed everything in his path, including the destiny of their girl, Hillary Clinton.
Realizing this, the Left is out to get him and shame him for this painful abandonment.
The liberal, pro-abort rag Slate is not happy that Trump possesses what appears to be a newly found pro-life sensibility. I, for one, hope his statements regarding the sanctity of life and protection of the unborn are heartfelt. I pray he does not wander from them due to fear of offending or interest in reaching a wider, but less principled, audience.
Slate, on the other hand, can’t abide his reversal on this issue as made clear by the recent article Do You Have Information About Abortions Trump May Have Paid For? Let Us Know.
In a 1999 interview on Meet the Press, Trump described himself as “very pro-choice” and said he would not ban abortion, even late-term abortion, if elected president as the Reform Party candidate.
In 2003, on the Howard Stern Show, Trump alluded to an incident with a previous girlfriend who got pregnant, perhaps Marla Maples, who gave birth to their daughter Tiffany two months before Maples and Trump married in 1993. When the girlfriend announced her pregnancy, Trump recalled, “I said, ‘Well, what are we going to do about this?’ ” The question could well be read as Trump considering abortion for his girlfriend.
Earlier this year, the New York Times’ Maureen Dowd asked Trump whether he’d ever been “involved with anyone who had an abortion.” “Such an interesting question,” he replied. “So what’s your next question?”
The article ends with a plea which seeks to shame Trump for any possible connection to abortion in the past.
…given his history of statements about abortion, no one would be shocked if it turned out that Trump has paid for a partner or family member’s abortion or otherwise supported a close associate’s choice to abort. But at the moment, all we have is speculation, not facts. Slate would like to illuminate Trump’s personal history with abortion, which is why we are requesting information on abortions that Trump has paid for or supported. If you’re in possession of such information, please send it to [email protected].
There are problems aplenty with this hunt.
Slate routinely publishes furious pieces (from writers such as shrill Amanda Marcotte) which praise abortion, slam pro-lifers, and question why men would even dare to discuss what is, to them, only a women’s issue. To the Left, abortion is a holy sacrament. They bow before the altar of choice and offer up the broken remains of their unborn children. After all, the Left preaches that abortion is a routine medical procedure, not legal homicide. Slate often attempts to quell any question of a troubled conscience with pieces entitled The Myth of Abortion Regret and How Television Misrepresents Abortion.
Going after Trump for possibly supporting, encouraging, or paying for abortions isn’t from a desire to hold him accountable for his involvement in the killing of unborn children. Instead, it’s an attempt to shame him for breaking from their ideology of bloodlust. And to the Left, that’s the worst mistake Trump has made.
If he were to remain on their side, his past connections to abortion would be celebrated and anyone seeking to dig up dirt, as they themselves are doing now, would be sharply dealt with.
I don’t know for sure whether or not Trump has encouraged lovers or friends to get abortions in the past. If it’s true, then he has been an accomplice to murder. For his part, I suggest he talk to God about his guilt, if he has any. But as of right now, Trump has stated that he is pro-life and would appoint a Supreme Court justice who is opposed to abortion. If that results in overturning Roe v. Wade (unlikely, given its 40+ year precedent) and returning it to the states, then so be it.
Those who are fiercely pro-life such as myself do not make light of someone who has chosen abortion for themselves or others in the past. It is a serious matter, and one which I hope causes regret and more importantly, resolve to go forward, join in the fight, and speak on behalf of the millions who have been killed.
Slate believes they are holding Trump accountable for hypocrisy with a digital witch-hunt. Instead, they continue to prove themselves devoid of any principle and only focused on pushing the product of abortion.
