President Joe Biden has officially launched his bid for re-election in 2024, putting him on a possible path to a rematch with former president Donald Trump.

The Biden campaign released a video on social media early Tuesday morning, declaring that it was time to “finish the job.”

Every generation has a moment where they have had to stand up for democracy. To stand up for their fundamental freedoms. I believe this is ours.

“Every generation has a moment where they have had to stand up for democracy. To stand up for their fundamental freedoms,” his announcement read. “I believe this is ours.”

It continued with, “That’s why I’m running for reelection as President of the United States. Join us. Let’s finish the job.”

Biden’s re-election run comes amid Republican in-fighting, particularly as the Trump camp is focusing its fire on Florida Governor Ron DeSantis. The Republican field is filling fast, with Trump, Nikki Haley, and Vivek Ramaswamy having declared their candidacy, Sen. Tim Scott has formed an exploratory committee, and DeSantis and vice president Mike Pence are expected to make announcements in the near future as well.

Joe Biden has been telegraphing his re-election bid, though there has been previous speculation he may not run due to concerns about his age and cognition – including from within his own party.

Those concerns, as well as others, led Democrat Robert Kennedy, Jr. to announce his own candidacy.

“Let’s Finish the Job”

Biden’s re-election campaign is kicking off at a tough time for an incumbent. Inflation is still high, but it is coming down. Unfortunately, it’s being brought down by rising interest rates from the Federal Reserve. That is expected to play a role in an impending recession most financial experts still see coming.

Also on the domestic side, crime is still dominating headlines, leading to voter dissatisfaction – particularly in major cities (crime played a major role in a Republican surge in New York during the 2022 midterms). The southern border is mired in an immigration crisis that the administration has struggled to deal with.

And there’s also a major drug crisis as fentanyl also dominates the headlines – with ties back to Mexican cartels utilizing the southern border to get pills as well as the ingredients to make more across.

One might be forgiven for asking exactly what job Joe Biden wants to finish.

Who Else Is There?

But while Democrats have seemingly been extremely worried about Biden’s ability to handle a grueling re-election campaign, there is a realization among the party that few alternatives exist.

Vice President Kamala Harris has been talked about, but several negative stories have been plaguing her tenure in office, with a high staff turnover and allegations that she is aloof but temperamental. She has been tasked by the Biden administration to oversee immigration issues and, more recently, abortion access as the Democrats try to utilize the complicated effects of last summer’s Dobbs ruling.

Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg has also been talked about as a potential successor to Biden, but his office has been overwhelmed with major headaches – from a train derailment to a massive shutdown of air traffic – with seemingly little response.

Biden’s campaign announcement will allow him to begin fundraising, which will be integral to his re-election bid. Biden will have to do a lot of travel and have to focus a lot of time (and money) building a picture of a hopeful future if the American public sticks with him.

The reference to “standing up for democracy” in his campaign announcement appears to be a reference to former president Trump and attempts to claim the 2020 election was stolen. Democrats have been sticking with their claim that Republicans are undermining democracy by continuing to push for election reform and supporting Trump in general.

But, it may take a lot more to convince Americans this go ’round.
