An ice cream shop in Montclair, New Jersey is provoking feminists with a cartoon logo of a cow with a shapely backside.
A cheeky logo of a cartoon cow has sparked a beef between a derrière-themed ice cream shop and residents who say the image is sexist.
Complaints against the newly opened Dairy Air Ice Cream Co. began Monday with an open letter by local business owner Amy Tingle, who blasted the store for sexualizing women to sell ice cream and demanded that the logo be put out to pasture.
Amy Tingle sounds like she’d be really fun at parties. It is easy to imagine her business—The Creativity Caravan, which she owns with her partner Maya Stein—being a real-life version of the feminist bookstore on Portlandia based on her hyperbole.
“It is offensive and sickening,” Tingle wrote. “A hyper-sexualized, obviously female cow with her ass upended and poking through a circle, tail raised up, waiting for what? I’m not sure, but I do know that I am repulsed and offended.”
Cows are all obviously female, otherwise, they’d be bulls, but that’s not important right now. I’ll concede the logo is sexualized but “hyper-sexualized?” You would have to lead a very sheltered life to make that claim.
The logo is not visible from the store’s exterior but is plastered on the store’s furniture, walls and cups, making girls and women feel “as if we are things for someone else’s sexual use,” Tingle wrote.
If a cartoon cow makes you feel like you are a thing for someone else’s use, you probably have some mental health issues that need to be addressed. But that is the least of the problems caused by using a lame pun to sell ice cream according to Tingle. It is precisely this sort of goofy marketing idea that has made Donald Trump President of the United States.
“This kind of marketing scheme is the reason we currently have a sexual predator in the White House,” she continued. “This is offensive, not just to women, but to husbands and fathers and brothers and uncles and grandfathers who are trying to raise strong young women in a culture that continuously sexualizes them rather than treating them equally, with dignity and respect.”
This cow is the focus of evil in the modern world.
I have to say I do think this is a pretty bad marketing idea. The double entendre is unappetizing either way you interpret it. Anyone who has ever been close to a dairy knows that the aroma of “dairy air”could knock a buzzard off a gut wagon. Taken the other way, you’re selling French cow-ass ice cream.
The conversation is set to continue on Saturday, when Stein and Tingle will open their studio for a community meeting.
