Could Some Major Health Insurance Reforms Be Enacted through Executive Action?

Senator Rand Paul has good ideas when it comes to how to fix the Obamacare mess. First he is an advocate of full repeal and wants to undo it, root and branch. Second he has ideas for transforming the market to allow everyone the economies of scale that right now only seem to apply to large employer based plans.

It was reported today that he’s been talking to President Trump about enacting policy that would allow people to associate in order to obtain more affordable health insurance.

U.S. Senator Rand Paul said he spoke to President Donald Trump by phone about healthcare reform on Monday and told the president he thought Trump had the authority to create associations that would allow organizations to offer group health insurance plans.

Paul, a Republican, told reporters that Trump was considering taking some form of executive action to address problems with the healthcare system after the Senate failed last week to pass a measure to reform the system.

Like his predecessor, President Trump isn’t bashful about using executive orders. To be fair, he uses them often to undo Obama’s executive orders.

I’ve been complaining forever that Trump isn’t providing any input on policy in the health care debate. If  Rand Paul is the one who manages to steer him toward some good ideas, that would make me happy. I’m not a fan of governing through executive action but if this can be done legally and in accordance with the Constitution I’m all for it.
