A writer for far left magazine Mother Jones has apparently led a very sheltered life judging from what she considers to be “stunningly racist.” Nathalie Baptiste uses that phrase to describe a fundraising email sent by the Draft Sheriff Clarke for Senate Super-PAC. Based on her article’s headline, she’s actually saying that the email is more than “stunningly” racist:  There’s Racist. And Then There’s Stunningly Racist. Then There’s This GOP Fundraising Email.

(It’s not really a GOP email either, but that may just be splitting hairs.)

Last week, a fundraising email was circulated in support of David Clarke, Milwaukee’s infamous conservative sheriff. The email was made to look like it came from Rudy Giuliani.

However, it was actually sent by Jack Daly, the self-appointed national chairman of the official draft Sheriff Clarke for Senate effort. Daly wants Sheriff Clarke to unseat liberal stalwart Tammy Baldwin in Wisconsin.

In the course of one email, Daly—who, according to his LinkedIn profile, was counsel on the Senate Judiciary Committee from 2006 to 2009 and served as counsel to several Republicans on the committee including Jeff Sessions (R-Ala.), Chuck Grassley (R-Iowa), and Lindsey Graham (R-S.C.)—manages to invoke multiple racist images, while simultaneously using the fact that Clarke is black as a point of pride.

The “multiple racist images” she mentions are far from “stunning.” Racial identity politics of any kind are racist by any common sense definition. (The academic definitions concocted by academics in grievance-studies departments that say only white people can be racist are just self serving bullsh*t.)

Both left and right engage in racial identity politics. The right’s version is primarily a reaction to the left’s. Often, people who belong to an identity group traditionally beholden to the left but who articulate views consistent with the right get quickly elevated within the movement. So Baptiste is right in pointing out that Clarke’s race is used as a point of pride. The same thing happens with children, blonde bimbette millennials, gays, and celebrities. For some reason people on the right think that arguments from these walks of life are more persuasive, but the left merely dismisses them as traitors. Their black, young, gay, whatever status gets revoked by those who claim to speak for those groups.

In light of all that, the fundraising email in question seems more ridiculous than racist.

The official draft Sheriff David Clarke for U.S. Senate campaign, which is independent of Clarke himself, filed its statement of organization on January 19, the day before Donald Trump’s inauguration. The advisory board contains conservative activists and reality TV star Duane “Dog the Bounty Hunter” Chapman. The official website for the committee describes Clarke as “The Black Rush Limbaugh with a Badge,” referring to the right-wing radio show host who frequently comes under fire for racist and inflammatory remarks.

Rush comes under fire for racist and inflammatory remarks while seldom if ever making any such remarks, but apart from playing reactionary identity politics there’s nothing “stunning” or particularly racist about the comparison between Clarke and Limbaugh.

Daly also blames Barack Obama for creating a country where “blacks, Muslims, illegal aliens, and politically correct ‘social justice warriors'” feel as if they can “attack” Trump supporters, police officers, businesses, and even children, and suffer no consequences such as jail or deportation.

There is some truth to this even if it’s being sensationalized for political impact, as Ricochet editor Jon Gabriel often reminds us.

And for Daly, there’s only one way to stop all the chaos caused by liberals, black people, and undocumented immigrants: Sheriff Clarke unseating Baldwin, whom Daly calls an “in-your-face lesbian and screaming feminist.”

If Baptiste looked at Democrat fundraising emails she’d find equally aggressive language and demonization of Republican candidates. Fundraising emails across the board are rather offensive because their goal is to make someone mad enough to write a check.

Finally, Baptiste gets to the the part that is allegedly beyond stunningly racist, quoting from the email.

Milwaukee’s conservative black Sheriff CORRECTLY says “BLACK LIVES MATTER” is a terrorist movement, a hate group, and calls it “Black LIES Matter.” He called Al Sharpton a “charlatan,” and said he “should shut up and go back into the gutter.”

Again, aggressive and sensational but arguably true. “Hands up don’t shoot” was a lie but is still perpetuated by BLM. And Al Sharpton IS a charlatan. Plenty of folks involved in the BLM movement wouldn’t even disagree with that assessment.

Does your Senator talk like that?

Does he urge black voters to “leave the Democrat plantation”? Does he say, “I’m tired of this race card thing”?

This is far less stunning than when a major left wing political cartoonist portrays a sitting Secretary of State as Prissy from Gone with the Wind saying “Lawzy, I don’t know nothin’ ’bout…” whatever or when Senator Tim Scott gets routinely called a “house n*gger.” For the left that’s allowable because they don’t align their thinking with their collective.

Does he call Planned Parenthood “Planned Genocide”?

Maybe look into the history of that organization and it’s founder Margaret Sanger before dismissing that as racist rhetoric.

Does your Senator post this on Facebook? “Islam: Don’t Try to Understand ‘Sick Ideology’ of Islamism; Destroy It.”

Islam isn’t a race and it does have a sick ideology associated with it that is often called “Islamism.”

This is all so far below the threshold of “stunning,” that it’s difficult to believe that Baptiste is anything other than a political hack equal and opposite to the man whose email she’s offended by.
