As I and my other colleagues on RedState have reported, the battle for Life has not ended with the overturn of Roe v. Wade. If anything, it has ramped up. The vote on Tuesday in Kansas rejecting the proposed constitutional amendment that would have specified that the right to terminate a pregnancy isn’t protected should show just how much. Kansas is redder than red, yet the majority of the people voted against this amendment. This is why the Supreme Court unraveled abortion from federal control in order to bring the matter back to the people who are actually affected and allow them to have their say.

The freedom within those decision-making powers extends to the local level. California Governor Gavin Newsom has declared the state as a sanctuary for abortion rights. Newsom and his echo chamber in the Legislature assume that women in California are all on board for this. They have even instituted a ballot measure to enshrine the right to abortion in the California Constitution.

But locally, there are people who think differently, and it is not getting very much press because it breaks from the chosen narrative.

For California, it is the canary in a coal mine of this abortion debate.

A San Clemente councilman wants the council to consider a Resolution declaring the city a Pro-Life sanctuary as reported by Fox News 11.

The city of San Clemente is considering a resolution that would ban abortions, declaring itself a “sanctuary for life” as it becomes an abortion-free zone.

Written and proposed by Councilman Steven Knoblock, the resolution “considers life to begin at conception.”

During a July 19 city council meeting, Knoblock spoke before other councilmembers, saying “my request is that the city council consider resolutions basically supporting the concept of life.”

“I’m asking this city council to consider.”

This is a Resolution, which has no executive, legislative, or legal power. It doesn’t supersede California law, or prevent any woman who lives in San Clemente from seeking out and obtaining an abortion. Not seeing the problem here, but this is California, and when it comes to anything that has to do with protecting Life and honoring God, the progressive contingent is going to come out to condemn it.

Case in point:

The ordinance was seconded by Mayor Gene James, but is opposed by councilmemers [sic] Kathy Ward, Chris Duncan and Laura Ferguson.

“This is not a city issue,” said Councilmember Ward.

“It’s going to cause a lot of problems with the council. You’re going to make half the people in the city unhappy?” she said.

So, Berkeley, Los Angeles, Oakland, and San Diego can declare themselves sanctuary cities against ICE, but San Clemente cannot declare itself a sanctuary city against abortion?

I call BS.

Despite what Governor “Hair Gel” wants to dictate or what Sacramento does, the Counties can defy it. They have that much power, as we have seen in this never-ending state of emergency. Orange County, where San Clemente is domiciled, has done this a number of times; I do not see it stopping any time soon.

San Clemente Mayor Gene James added his thoughts on the resolution.

“There’s no issue more important to me than protecting the unborn. However, are we prepared to fill this room with people yelling at each other?” he said.

Knoblock agreed with the mayor when asked if he was looking for “a resolution supporting life.”

This is our problem. Elected leaders who do not want to LEAD. If you cannot manage conflict and discussion, and allow the people affected by these matters to be heard, you have no business being in office. Period. Full stop.

The very nature of conflict involves heated discussion and sometimes yelling. Mayor James needs to put his money where his mouth is.

The atrocious Planned Parenthood of Orange County had to weigh in and call this Resolution, “dangerous.”

So are Planned Parenthood centers, especially for babies in the womb.

Meanwhile, in Washington, D.C. where you essentially have no say, the Biden administration is still spinning their wheels trying to do an end-run around the SCOTUS Dobbs decision. This time, with another executive order authorizing the use of Medicaid funds to pay for out-of-state abortions.

The lawsuits will be pouring in on that one soon. In the meantime, San Clemente will consider this Sanctuary Life Resolution on August 16 at their next council meeting, where the citizens of the city will be able to have their say—as it should be.
