In the suburb of Denison, Texas, a homeowner endured a harrowing episode when confronted by a hammer-wielding home intruder. The incident not only highlights the importance of responsible gun ownership but also state laws surrounding the use of deadly force in self-defense.

The altercation occurred around 4:30 p.m. when a home intruder forced his way into a private residence while armed with a hammer.

A Denison homeowner shot a man who came to his door and attacked him with a hammer Monday.

Grayson County Sheriff’s Deputies were called to a residence on McCraw Lane east of Denison around 4:30 p.m.

The homeowner told deputies a man whom he did not know came to his door and forced entry into his home while brandishing a hammer.

As the homeowner tried to get the man to leave, he attacked the homeowner and struck him with the hammer.

The homeowner then shot the man and called authorities.

The assailant was airlifted to a hospital in stable but critical condition and is hopefully rethinking his life choices while recovering.

This incident further highlights the importance of gun ownership and self-defense. In this case, the homeowner’s split-second decision to use his firearm likely saved his life and prevented an even worse tragedy.

It is also fortunate that this citizen happens to live in Texas, which has a robust Stand Your Ground law, which empowers individuals to use deadly force without a duty to retreat when faced with a perceived threat. The legislation applies in situations in which an armed individual reasonably believes that they are in danger from an aggressor’s attack.

Unlike state governments in places like California and New York, Texas lawmakers understand the need to allow people to protect their lives and property using firearms or other weapons. The homeowner could have found himself facing prosecution in those other states whose governments prioritize protecting violent criminals over safeguarding law-abiding Americans. But in others, the battle for the right to keep and bear arms is not quite as respected.
