Prepare to not be shocked. A House Ethics Committee investigation has concluded that Rep. Jamaal Bowman (D-NY) told a series of untruths related to his bizarre decision to set off a fire alarm in the Cannon House Office Building last September. Nevertheless, the two-tier justice system is still in effect, and Bowman will receive a mere slap on the wrist for an offense that would result in a regular person being thrown in a cage.
After it was revealed that Bowman had pulled the stunt, it ignited a firestorm on the airwaves and interwebs. The situation became even more laughable when the lawmaker claimed he had accidentally pulled the alarm, believing it to be a switch to open the exit door.
However, an ethics committee report noted that Bowman’s claims were far from the truth.
Following mounting criticism and calls for the Department of Justice to investigate Rep. Bowman for his actions in triggering a false alarm of fire in the Cannon House Building earlier in the day, Rep. Bowman sought to “personally clear up confusion” and extinguish the controversy. To this end, Rep. Bowman released an official statement where he claimed that he “mistakenly” activated the fire alarm “thinking it would open the door.
However, [Office of Congressional Ethics] staff obtained evidence appearing to contradict Rep. Bowman’s claim that he mistakenly activated the fire alarm.
Surveillance video obtained by the OCE shows Rep. Bowman deliberately pulling the fire alarm lever without ever looking back to determine whether the alarm facilitated the opening of the emergency doors.
Indeed, as highlighted above, Rep. Bowman casually walked away from the secured area upon triggering the fire alarm, appearing seemingly disinterested in actually departing through the exit.
More importantly, at the time of this incident, the House stood adjourned. Rep. Bowman, contrary to statements issued by his office, was enroute to an emergency Caucus (Democrat) meeting—not to cast an imminent vote.
The report indicated that “Rep. Bowman’s official statement and those published by his staff to be less than credible or otherwise misleading.”
Being a member of the ruling class, Bowman is not facing any serious punishment for this stunt. The committee in November decided against opening a full investigation into the lawmaker.
The House Ethics Committee voted on Wednesday and chose to not open an investigation into Bowman's conduct despite ample evidence existing that he did so to postpone a vote on the floor. That follows on the heels of the DOJ also deciding not to press the issue, with no charge for obstructing an official proceeding even being entertained.
The Ethics Committee is split evenly between the parties, with five Republican and five Democrat members. While the vote breakdown isn't known, a logical assumption would be that all the Democrats voted not to investigate Bowman, causing a tie vote. A majority is required to move forward.

The authorities didn’t seem to believe the stunt was a big deal either. The lawmaker agreed to a deferred sentencing agreement in which he pled guilty to one misdemeanor of setting off a false fire alarm, and was required to pay a $1,000 fine and issue an apology to the Capitol Police. In exchange, the authorities agreed to drop the criminal charge.
It must be nice to be a member of the elite, right?
The House voted to censure Bowman in December, which amounts to little more than a light scolding for Bowman’s misbehavior.

This is only one incident displaying a larger pattern in which political figures, by and large, operate above the rules that govern we the peasants, and is a prime example of the two-tier justice system that reigns supreme in America.
