What Is Liz Cheney up To?

I apologize in advance for the amount of Rep. Liz Cheney (R-WY) in this article. But there has been a lot of Rep. Liz Cheney in the news and on the interwebs lately – more than is usual. Over the past two years, the lawmaker has dedicated her entire platform to railing against the Orange Man What Is Bad™. Like others in the NeverTrump camp, she has shown a remarkable lack of self-awareness and an inability to read the room. But it does raise a question: Why is she squawking so much louder lately?

On Thursday, Cheney made an appearance on CNN’s “Anderson Cooper 360,” in which she did her usual “I Hate Trump” schtick and channeled her inner Adam Schiff by claiming there is still a ton of info to be unveiled in the Democrats’ show trial titled “The Let’s Get Trump Hearings.” She even went so far as to claim that if the Department of Justice does not prosecute former President Donald Trump, then the U.S. is no longer “a nation of laws.”

CNN media activist Kasie Hunt said to Cheney: “Some have expressed concern that prosecuting former President Trump would turn him into a martyr and potentially add to his political strength for the base that follows him pretty rabidly. Do you share that concern? Do you have any concern that the prosecution would strengthen Donald Trump’s political hand?”

Cheney responded:

“I don’t think that it is appropriate to think about it that way because the question for us is, are we a nation of laws? Are we a country where no one is above the law? And with that, the facts and the evidence shows. Certainly, I have been very clear, and I think he is clearly guilty of the most derelict of duty of any president of our nation’s history. A federal judge in California said that it is more likely than not that he and John Eastman committed two crimes. I think that we are going to continue to follow facts and that the Department of Justice will do that. They had to make decisions about prosecution, understanding what it means if the facts and evidence are there and they decide not to prosecute. How do we then call ourselves a nation of laws? I think it’s very serious balance.”

Hunt continued, asking how much the witch hunters committee has learned about Trump’s role in the Jan. 6, 2021 riot at the U.S. Capitol that was “unexpected.”

Cheney answered:

“It’s been more information and more sophisticated and broader reaching effort than I understood coming into it. I think all of us on the committee have had that same reaction, which is that there’s so much more that was happening in multiple different areas, whether it was the pressure on state officials, or the pressure on the Justice Department, or the attempt to pressure the vice president himself. I think the volume of information has been more than I expected. Certainly, obviously, I came into this very concerned. The information itself has not lessened my concern at all.”

Cheney has been making the rounds on various media outlets sounding the alarm about the supposed threat Trump poses to American democracy. But her feverish obsession with the former president has cost her dearly in the polls, which paint a rather bleak picture of her future in politics. In fact, the situation has become so desperate, she turned to actor Kevin Costner, a Hollywood liberal, in an attempt to appeal to conservative voters in Wyoming. She posted a tweet in which she wrote: “Real men put country over party” and featured a picture of Costner wearing a t-shirt that read: “I’m for Liz Cheney.”

As RedState’s Nick Arama so aptly pointed out:

Costner voted for Barack Obama, even said he was interested in Michelle Obama running, and voted for Joe Biden. So how is he “putting country over party”? He’s with the Democrats, just as Cheney is. Why would anyone in Wyoming care what Costner thinks about Cheney? She’s hard up for help at this point.

But wait! There’s more!

Cheney did not stop with getting a Costner endorsement. She even went to dear old dad to get in front of a camera to lecture us all on how bad the Orange Man is. “In our nation’s 246-year history, there has never been an individual who is a greater threat to our republic than Donald Trump,” said the aptly-named Dick Cheney, who happens to have been the vice president of an administration responsible for the Patriot Act and several other atrocities. “A real man wouldn’t lie to his supporters.”

Of course, the irony of criticizing a politician for lying is rather ironic coming from Pa Cheney for obvious reasons too numerous to list in this piece.

But what is Liz Cheney hoping to achieve? The answer seems simple: She knows her political career is going down the drain in a couple of weeks when Wyoming holds its primary elections and she wants to throw as much silliness out into the ether with her dying breath as she possibly can.

She knows her time is coming to an end, so she has to do as much as possible before she becomes irrelevant. Of course, this does not mean we will not see any more Cheney in the future. You can best believe she will become one of the activist media’s heroes. But when she is out of Congress, she won’t matter because she will no longer have the power she possesses now. She is desperate to ensure Trump goes down with her – but if things continue as they are, she is in for a deep disappointment.
