In his first week, President Joe Biden is sending a pointed message to the constituents who worked hardest to get him elected. So far, he has announced his agenda for catering to illegal immigrants, the LGBTQ community, and even Asian and Native Americans. But there is one group that he has ignored: the black community.
The Hill reported on a series of executive orders Biden will enact in the coming days. The noted, “Biden this week will focus on immigration, health care, climate and other areas, with each day following a designated theme.”
Under the theme of “racial equity,” Biden plans to issue a slew of executive orders. For starters, he is “likely to establish a policing commission and reinstate Obama-era rules on the transfer of military-style equipment to local law enforcement,” according to The Hill. He will also direct the Justice Department to improve prison conditions and work towards eliminating private prisons.
The Hill also noted:
Other executive actions lined up for Tuesday include a memorandum directing agencies to strengthen engagement with Native American tribes, a memo ordering the Department of Housing and Urban Development to promote equality in housing, and an order disavowing discrimination against the Asian American and Pacific Islander community.
The latter issue came to the forefront early in the coronavirus pandemic, when Asian Americans said they were harassed because the virus originated in China.
Finally, the Biden will likely issue orders to address “immigration and reversing a ban on transgender troops serving in the military.”
So, let’s get this straight. The only bone the president is willing to throw to black voters is possibly forming a policing commission that will likely go nowhere and making things more comfortable for prisoners?
How about we put this in perspective.
One of Biden’s first priorities is to provide amnesty for over 11 million illegal immigrants and give them a path to citizenship. But he has no plans for Americans – most of which are black – who are incarcerated for nonviolent drug offenses. He has yet to announce any actions or legislative proposals to address economic issues in predominantly black communities.
Even people on the left have noted the Biden administration’s refusal to address black voters. Activist Shaun King, also known as Snow J. Simpson, has been lambasting the president since his first day in office.
In his latest tweet, he wrote: “Day 4. Nothing from Joe Biden on confronting police violence and mass incarceration in spite of committing to families that it would be a priority on Day 1. Every day goes by and he issues order after order, action after action, but nothing on this promise.

RedState’s Jennifer Oliver O’Connell noted that black intellectuals aren’t exactly enthused about Biden’s presidency. Filmmaker Tony Lindsay said, “I don’t see anything that is geared toward the African-American community which handed Joe Biden the election.”

While many on the left argue that black people should just “be patient” with the Biden administration, the fact that he is clearly prioritizing the concerns of illegal immigrants and the alphabet community sends a message. It says that Biden is doing what Democrats always do: Give lip service to the black community while doing very little after they are in office.
Of course, over the next few months, Biden might actually get around to pretending to care about black folks again. He will make symbolic gestures and push for programs and legislation that look nice but don’t really accomplish anything. Biden will do this for two reasons. Firstly, he doesn’t have to worry about re-election because he does not intend to seek a second term. Indeed, he may end up resigning before his first term is concluded.
Secondly, Biden knows what all Democrats know: They can do whatever they want because they don’t have any real competition for black votes. However, this might change soon if the Republican Party finally wakes up and takes a cue from President Trump. If the GOP finally starts taking black voters seriously, the Democrats will see less support from the black community in the future.
It is worth noting that the GOP’s approach to minority communities will be determined by the faction that wins dominance on the right. If the Republican aristocracy entrenched in the establishment remains, the party will continue ignoring the black community. Conversely, if the non-establishment bloc wrenches power from the Mitt Romney/Liz Cheney wing of the party, the GOP might just start moving in the right direction.
But until then, this tweet posted by entrepreneur and author Doe Doobs sums the situation up nicely:
