“Just had a very nice meeting with Attorney General Bill Barr at the White House, Trump tweeted. “Our relationship has been a very good one, he has done an outstanding job! As per letter, Bill will be leaving just before Christmas to spend the holidays with his family…”

The president continued, declaring that he was appointing Deputy Attorney General Jeff Rosen to replace Barr. “Deputy Attorney General Jeff Rosen, an outstanding person, will become Acting Attorney General. Highly respected Richard Donoghue will be taking over the duties of Deputy Attorney General. Thank you to all!” he wrote.

Trump’s tweet including a copy of Barr’s resignation letter in which the attorney general expressed his gratitude for being given the opportunity to serve under the president. “I am greatly honored that you called on me to serve your Administration and the American people once again as Attorney General,” he wrote.

Barr touted Trump’s achievements, saying that he is “proud to have played a role in the many successes and unprecedented achievements you have delivered for the American people.” He also referenced the president’s fight against the Democrats’ Russiagate hoax.

“The nadir of this campaign was the effort to cripple, if not oust, your Administration with frenzied and baseless accusations of collusion with Russia,” he wrote. “Few could have weathered these attacks, much less forge ahead with a positive program for the country.”

Last week, the New York Times reported that Barr was considering stepping down before the end of President Trump’s term. Sources familiar with Barr’s thinking told the Times that the attorney general “had concluded that he had completed the work that he set out to accomplish at the Justice Department.
