K.T. McFarland, a former deputy national security adviser to President Donald Trump lashed out at the FBI and the intelligence community for their actions against the president. In a Wednesday appearance on Fox News, McFarland accused members of the intelligence community of trying to “trick” former Trump adviser Michael Flynn into engaging in behavior that could damage the president.
She said, “They lulled him into thinking, ‘Well, you’re not a subject, you’re not somebody under investigation.’ The whole time, they were targeting him, they were targeting me, and they were targeting the Trump administration.”
McFarland then laid out the reasons why these partisan members of the FBI and the intelligence community were targeting Flynn and others in Trump’s circle. “One, they wanted to bring the Trump administration to its knees before it even got started,” she said. “Number two, they wanted to protect whatever lies it now turns out they were saying, and I’m saying with this regard [to] the intelligence community at large. And third, they didn’t want to have the new administration see what they had done during the previous administration.”
Flynn was forced to resign from his position in the Trump administration after he pled guilty to lying to the FBI during the Russia investigation. He later withdrew his plea. The DOJ recently stopped pursuing its case against the former adviser after unsealed documents were revealed indicated that agents seemed to be already planning to prosecute before interviewing Flynn in 2017.
McFarland also indicated that partisan actors honed in on Flynn because they wanted to stop his plan to “reorganize the intelligence community, which was our intention from the very beginning.” She continued, “The real goal for them was to go after President Trump. We were collateral damage. They didn’t care whose lives they ruined. They wanted to go after President Trump.”
In a recent appearance on “Fox & Friends,” McFarland revealed what Flynn said to her on his final day in his position. “You know, the last words that General Michael Flynn said to me the night he left the office in the West Wing on the night he had to resign? He said, ‘You know the irony? I joined the military to fight the Russians,'” she said, recalling how Flynn’s exit from the administration unfolded amid suggestions that he planned to help the Kremlin.
