On Thursday, amid a pitched battle over a stimulus for small businesses, President Donald Trump and several Republican lawmakers went after Democrats on social media and the airwaves. The right is pushing an all-out frontal assault against their left-leaning colleagues in an effort to pressure them into passing a bill that will provide much-needed relief for small businesses and their employees.

Earlier in the day, President Trump went on the warpath, calling out House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) and Democratic lawmakers. He tweeted:

Democrats are blocking additional funding for the popular Paycheck Protection Program. They are killing American small businesses. Stop playing politics Dems! Support Refilling PPP NOW – it is out of funds!

House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) also chimed in, castigating House Democrats for causing Americans to lose jobs by blocking the bill.

Republicans have a simple, single-page bill that would do one thing: add more money for small businesses to keep people employed.

Sen. Ted Cruz (R-TX) lashed out at Pelosi in a scathing tweet, rebuking her for playing political games with people’s income.

Sen. Marco Rubio (R-FL) also commented on the Democrats’ refusal to fund small businesses.

Ironically,the single biggest flaw “keeping far too many small businesses from receiving the resources they need” is that you are blocking more money for #PPP.

The war of words between Republicans and Democrats in the government is heating up as the original $349 billion that was allocated for emergency loans for small businesses has been tapped out. Members of Congress are currently squabbling over the passage of another stimulus bill intended to help small business owners and their employees.

The Paycheck Protection Program (PPP), which is administered by the Small Business Administration (SBA), provides forgivable loans to small business owners to keep employees working. The SBA issued a statement on Thursday morning indicating that it is unable to accept new applications. “The SBA is currently unable to accept new applications for the Paycheck Protection Program based on available appropriations funding,” the statement read.

The PPP was created by the $2.2 trillion economic relief bill that Congress passed in March. The program was designed to help small companies affected by the COVID-19 outbreak obtain cash quickly. Shortly after the law was passed, there was an urgent demand for emergency loans nationwide, which overwhelmed the system.

Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnel (R-KY) attempted to pass a second round of funding for small businesses last week, but the Democrats blocked him. They argued that the law should include $100 billion for hospitals and $150 billion for state and local governments. The GOP wishes to limit the bill to an additional $250 billion for the program.

“Republicans tried to pass more money for Americans’ paychecks last week. Democrats blocked it. Democrats did nothing and now the program has shut down,” McConnell tweeted on Thursday.

The Democrats haven’t yet given a very persuasive argument for their stalling of the bill. Pelosi called on Republicans to stop “posturing” and start negotiating. However, her remarks demonstrate a callous disregard for small businesses and the workers who depend on them for employment; she would rather spend more time in negotiations than provide these individuals with the resources they desperately need.

The fact that Democrats hastily left D.C. after blocking the bill is only going to make them look worse, especially since they are not scheduled to return until May 4. In an appearance on C-Span, Pelosi was questioned about the decision to deprive small businesses of urgently-needed funds. Her answer was essentially a crisp word salad with extra bovine manure dressing.

RedState’s Nick Arama wrote:

“Let me translate the facts for her. Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell said we can look at other issues when they need the money, we know this is immediately needed for Americans and it’s going to be out of money so let’s get it done now. Her response at the time had been that she needed to see the ‘data.’”

It does not come as a surprise that Democrats would be so cavalier about denying funds to small business owners. After all, they would much rather have a solution that involves even more government involvement than allow the free market to solve the problem. But while they are busy playing politics and screeching “Orange Man Bad” in front of every camera they can find, everyday Americans are still suffering job loss and a variety of financial woes. Hopefully, the GOP won’t let the Democrats succeed.
