We hear quite a bit about members of the far-left progressive “Squad” in the Democratic Party. But we do not seem to hear enough about those who are challenging their positions in Congress. The Iraqi refugee challenging Rep. Ilhan Omar (D-MN) recently made an appearance on Fox and Friends explaining why she chose to run.
On last Friday’s episode of “Fox and Friends,” Dalia al-Aqidi, an Iraqi refugee hoping to unseat Rep. Ilhan Omar (D-MN), stated that the lawmaker is harming the country. Her challenger hopes to defeat her in November’s elections because of the damage Omar is causing. “I’m running because Ilhan Omar is doing irreparable harm not only to her district, not only to her state, to the whole country,” she said. She continued:
“As an American citizen, my duty is to defend my country and my duty is to stand up to her hatred and racism that she’s spreading within her community, within the country, and even worldwide. I have a question for Ilhan Omar that needs to be answered. Ilhan Omar is harming every American with her hatred, her standing against what we believe in, against our own Constitution.”
Al-Aqidi also stated that she believes in “building bridges,” and that, “We are all Americans and we can fight together, and we can discuss issues together.” The refugee also pointed out that Omar “needs to work for her constituents,” and “needs to represent them.”
But that wasn’t all that al-Aqidi had to say about her opponent, who took office in 2018. “She doesn’t care about her district. She’s done nothing for her district,” she said. “All she’s done is to harm her district, harm her followers, so many now, they are looking for someone else, and I’m here to say, do you know what? We Americans, we’re not divided. We all love our country, and let’s not take your hate [for] Trump against America. We are all Americans, and we can stand together, defend our country.”
Al-Aqidi is not the only individual stepping up to remove Omar. Iraq war veteran Chris Kelley also hopes to be the one to unseat the representative. In an interview with Fox News last year, he commented Omar’s comments on the 9/11 terror attacks, claiming that “some people did something.” He responded: “That statement was a slap in the face to first responders and everyone who died on that horrible day. I said to myself that I could either sit and complain about it or actually try and do something about it by running.”
Progressive media might make it seem as if Omar is overwhelmingly supported by her district. But perhaps they may have exaggerated the level of her support. Either way, we will find out how popular she truly is in November.
