Missouri Senator Claire McCaskill blasted Republicans on Sunday morning, alleging that their opposition to Obamacare was a “tantrum.”
“I don’t think in America we should throw tantrums when we lose elections and threaten to shut down the government and refuse to pay the bills,” the Missouri Democrat said on “Fox News Sunday.” “The American people had a choice last November. They had a choice between someone who said repeal Obamacare, and President Obama.”
She has a point. Elections have consequences and over three million registered Republicans stayed home. However, she does miss that Obamacare has never polled above horribly, and her remark on tantrums is a bit much. During the elections I was the only news outlet in town asking about a story related to McCaskill. I was shockingly excoriated by the Senator at a press conference and called an “operative” (which the Senator never proved when asked) simply because I diverted from the St. Louis media script of using kid gloves and flattery with McCaskill. During the campaign (before and after this) I was told by my employer who had spoken with the Senator that her camp had called my radio station several times to complain about my discussing her. I’m equally critical of both Republicans and Democrats (see my remarks on air and online about Missouri GOP’s failure to save a tax cut for voters and other issues) but to date, the only Republican who has ever complained about my criticism was Mitt Romney’s camp while I was at CNN. I’ve hosted Senator McCaskill on my radio program where I am always polite as would be anyone who genuinely wants answers on the issues.
In light of this and in absence of an apology, forgive me if I don’t take seriously the accusations of tantrums coming from Senator McCaskill. Considering that Missouri’s two legislative repudiations of Obamacare passed by over 60% across the state (the first over 70%, a 3-1 margin in every county in the state save KC and STL) I’m more interested in seeing if the Senator will actually represent her constituents, who oppose Obamacare, in the defund Obamacare fight.
