I’m not sure how I missed this yesterday as I wrote up this morning’s opinion piece. Evidently some Utahn (there’s that word again) lawmakers have decided to give their citizens a better chance to rid themselves of Senators who openly and notoriously caucus with the Democrats on existential issues such as the impeachment and removal of a duly elected President.

Republican Utah state Rep. Tim Quinn has introduced a bill in that state’s legislature that would allow voters to recall U.S. senators — a possible swipe at Utah Sen. Mitt Romney despite Quinn saying the bill isn’t targeted at anyone in particular.

First reported by Deserat News, the bill would create a process by which a recall vote could go on the ballot after a petition by voters.

As I noted in this morning’s opinion piece about a grassroots petition being organized (it’s up to 657 from yesterday’s 373), this proposed legislation might not go anywhere and even if passed, might face some constitutional challenges as the article notes below:

An Arkansas effort to impose term limits on its representatives was struck down by the Supreme Court in 1995, with the majority opinion saying that states are not authorized to add requirements for individuals to qualify for federal office — specifically, in that case, not having served in that body for a certain amount of time. Requiring senators to avoid a recall to keep their seats might run afoul of that same principle.

No matter. This is a fight worth having. The 17th Amendment with its objective of diminishing the power of the several states and instead gathering it in a 10 square mile district beside the Potomac, has succeeded to a fare thee well. It also forces a contradiction. Out of one side of their mouths, the left says, “The People should decide who sits in the Senate Chamber.” On the other, those same leftists inundate The People with lawsuits when they exercise their power by attempting to correct previous mistakes.

More on this particular aspect in a future article. For now, it appears some folks are letting miscreants like Romney know that their time receiving media adulation, is fleeting. This type of thing needs to spread to other states.
