How Trump Is NATO’ing the Globe on Tariffs

In a Rose Garden ceremony on Wednesday, President Trump made one thing very clear to the entire world— the days of taking advantage of the United States when it comes to global trade are over. There is no question that the U.S. has been abused when it comes to tariffs from other countries for decades.

"Liberation Day," as Trump has dubbed it, drove the left and legacy media to their usual hyperbolic scare tactics, which surprises no one. However, when you look at the astronomical differences in global tariffs that America pays verse the world, it’s impossible not to see how Americans, to put it mildly, are getting screwed. The White House put out a chart that shows the reciprocal tariffs the U.S. pays to other countries. China tariffs the United States at 67 percent; Vietnam at 90 percent —who is winning that trade deficit? Why are we paying a 90 percent tariff to Vietnam? Trump has looked at these numbers and said no more.

On Wednesday, Vice President JD Vance told Breitbart News’ Matt Boyle:

“…for 40 years, America has been the piggy bank of the world. We absorb all of the ridiculous trade practices and economic practices of friend and foe alike. For the first time in probably 40 years, we have an American president who’s saying, ‘No more,’ that it’s not going to work, that he’s not going to allow America to be taken advantage of anymore.”

Of course, this is true, but how would these practices ever change if the administration doesn’t take bold action? Remember during Trump 1.0 when NATO countries were paying only 1 percent or 2 percent of their GDP towards their NATO dues? While not perfect, the narrative has changed towards these payments, and countries are now stepping up to pay what they owe—that only happened because of Donald Trump. I believe his actions this week will have a similar impact—businesses working to make their products in America and companies investing directly in the United States. The hope is that items "made in China" will become old relics or a thing of the past.

Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick has continued to make another important point, discussing how our trade deficit with other countries has hollowed out our manufacturing industry and exported both jobs and services to countries outside the U.S., stating:

"America has been the place where we bought everybody else's goods, and we let them rip our factories apart…It's now time to rebuild our factories, to rebuild our manufacturing base, allow US to grow and build."

Reuters is reporting that General Motors announced Thursday their plan to increase production of their light-duty trucks in Fort Wayne, Indiana, in light of Trump's tariff announcement—I can only assume we will have more announcements like this coming in future weeks and months.

White House Deputy Chief of Staff Stephen Miller told Sean Hannity on Monday that we have nearly de-industrialized our country by outsourcing our economy, "This is the great healing and rejuvenation of the American economy after half a century of rampant offshoring, outsourcing, and de-industrialization." Miller goes on to discuss the idea that Americans used to be able to drive through our major cities like Detroit, Michigan, or states like Pennsylvania and see major industries powering the country and globe.

The reality? We have done this to ourselves, but not only that, politicians have allowed it to continue for far too long. President Trump understands clearly that the future of America is dependent on essentially forcing goods and services back into the United States. The media may not like it, the stock market may not like it, companies may not like it,  but there are no tariffs on products made in America—is this the beginning of a great American renaissance? For the future of America, I sure hope so.
