The Left Tuning Out of the Political Discussion Is Not the Win It Might Appear to Be

On Thursday, I wrote a report about an AP-NORC poll that showed two-thirds of Americans were tuning out of politics. This isn't surprising news, as post-election hangover plus the Christmas season is enough to make anyone need a break. It doesn't help that this was probably one of the more grueling elections we've had in some time.

But the poll revealed that the left is tuning out for more than the right is, which is also not very surprising seeing as how they lost and not by a little. The left found itself in a shrinking pool of supporters despite many Democrats never renouncing their status as "Democrats," which also hurt quite a bit. The left has always been a hivemind and with many breaking from the hive, for the first time, the left had to really fight off the idea that they were, indeed, in the wrong. Too many people were making too many good points about bad orange man, and the fearmongering proved to be fruitless.

Even if a little hypocritical

And so the left began to tune out in hopes to take a breather and possibly come back fighting stronger down the line... or so that's my hope.

You might think that's an odd thing to hope for, but if there's one thing the left has proved to me, it's that it's at its worst when it's ideologically isolated itself. The fact that the left shrank enough to give Donald Trump the popular vote isn't just a result of economic downturn alone, that's just what flushed them out into the open. Once they were looking for answers and were exposed to opposing viewpoints in an environment where it was beneficial to listen, the left began to weaken significantly.

The key was conversation and communication.

This is why leftists retreating from the conversation worries me. Some people might consider this a win because it just leaves the grown-ups in the room to talk. I get the sentiment and agree to a point, but the left has a talent of becoming crazier when it's bubbled. It doesn't naturally seek answers, it likes to provide them based on authoritative declarations and assertions, and that authority can take the form of a politician, an activist, or a celebrity.

The bottom line here is that we want leftists to continue speaking to us, arguing, fighting, and debating. The accuracy of their perception of reality depends on it, and if they retreat back into their bubble, we'll be at square one with too many of them.

And here's the rub. Much of the radical left still control the big stages. Now, this is also weakening due to recent technological and social developments slowly but surely rendering the big stages obsolete, but they still have a lot of influence as it stands. Losing the left in these conversations could result in these entities causing a regression, and we're back to having the same issues we've had for years now. This is going to happen regardless, but the difficulty level can be reduced if we just keep the left talking to us.

There are two ways to do this. The first is going to happen automatically thanks to Trump taking office soon. As I said in my previous article, this administration is going to be must-see TV, and I'm pretty sure the corporate media, with its steep leftist slant, is going to agree. Like a moth drawn to a flame, they're going to exaggerate everything Trump does in hopes of stoking fear and hatred of Trump and his supporters. I imagine that, in the early stages of Trump's second term, almost every news show will become like The View.

This is going to blow up in their faces significantly, hopefully causing something of an internal restructuring. It might even be happening now, but we'll see.

The second is that the right continue to engage in the culture more than it is. The left continues to see the entertainment sector of our society as a safe haven. We have to relieve them of that assumption.

This is something the right is becoming increasingly good at, thanks to online critics gathering more and more viewers as they deconstruct woke entertainment. As the AP-NORC poll showed, many people are starting to become sick of politics in their entertainment, even the left, and constantly attacking this politicization is garnering ire against the left.

In the end, the latter will be far more effective in the long-run than the former. At some point, Trump's presidency will end and things might actually grow quieter politically, however the culture will still continue to influence minds long after.

The goal is to ultimately make the modern left a relic, and to do that we need to keep the dialogue open. The Democrats always kept their power, not by what they introduced into the conversation, but primarily by what they kept out of it. The goal is to introduce more talk, not less.
