I’m beginning to understand why we didn’t have a red wave to ride and the more I watch “Republicans” like Kentucky Sen. Mitch McConnell, the more I think we needed a wake-up call to get us searching for some proverbial leaks in the proverbial hull.
As RedState’s Nick Arama pointed out on Tuesday, McConnell claimed that the GOP’s “number one priority” isn’t balancing the budget or reversing the overgrown government that’s constantly trying to encroach onto the people’s rights. No, it’s making sure Ukraine defeats Russia, and since that’s the GOP’s numero uno priority you can guess where he wants to send our taxpayer dollars.
“Making sure the Defense Department can deal with the major threats coming from Russia and China, providing assistance for Ukrainians to defeat the Russians is the number one priority for the United States right now according to most Republicans. That’s how we see the challenges confronting the country at the moment.”

To be clear, just a few months ago in October, the number one issue for Republicans was inflation and the economy according to a Harvard/Harris poll. Ukraine wasn’t anywhere near the top of the list. According to a poll from the Chicago Council on Global Affairs, Republicans’ thoughts on Ukraine are low and getting lower all the time with 33 percent of Republicans agreeing on long-term support.
McConnell is the head of the GOP. There’s no possible way he doesn’t see these numbers, so it’s safe to come to the conclusion that he’s knowingly lying about the GOP’s care about Ukraine or defeating Russia and China. It’s also odd to hear this concern about defeating China given McConnell’s deep connections to the country.
McConnell is using Ukraine as an excuse to spend recklessly, which is something Republican voters are vehemently against. As of now, we’re $31 trillion in debt, and McConnell is willing to swipe the national credit card for a country his party cares increasingly less for. He’s supposedly the head of the party of fiscal responsibility but he’s consistently demonstrating that what he really is is a D.C. denizen who’s spent too long in office.
If McConnell is the “how not to” then to find the “how to” look no further than his own state where Kentucky Senator Rand Paul is being more Republican than the leader of the Republican Party.
As Bonchie reported earlier on Wednesday, Paul went on a tirade about the omnibus bill delivered in the dead of night that contains 4,000+ pages. McConnell is singing this bill’s praises but Paul is ready to burn it and the rules that allowed its creation to the ground:
“I brought with me the omni, 4,155 pages. When was it produced? In the dead of the night, 1:30 in the morning it was released. Now, people argue that it’s conservatives’ fault, that you don’t have the Christmas spirit, somehow you’re holding up goverment. Well, whose job is it to produce this? The people in charge of spending. The people in charge of both of the parties. When did they know that this would be necessary?
Well, it’s in the law, September 30th. You’ve got nine months, almost ten months to produce a plan, to have a spending plan. They weren’t ready on September 30th so they voted themselves 90 more days. They weren’t ready last week either so they voted themselves another week. And now we have it at 1:30 in the morning, this morning.”
Paul ended with a line that had Republicans on the internet applauding.
“This process stinks. It’s an abomination. It’s a no-good rotten way to run a government. We’re standing up and saying ‘no.'”

Our country is in tremendous debt, our economy looks like a beaten wife, and the leaders we trust to fight battles on this country’s behalf are, for the most part, too busy playing personal politics to focus on what’s important.
Perhaps we need to change up the leadership, and perhaps Paul is a better choice for these times than someone who’s clearly become the poster child for the phrase “absolute power corrupts absolutely.”
