You couldn’t go to your social media website of choice for a hot minute without seeing Robert O’Rourke slinging the cursest of words at a Greg Abbott supporter at his rally. The man was laughing at O’Rourke’s description of an AR-15 during another pro-gun control rant about Uvalde, causing O’Rourke to turn on him and accuse him of thinking children dying is funny while calling him a “mother f***er.”

It’s likely O’Rourke knew the man was laughing at his AR-15 description and seized the opportunity for a headline. O’Rourke is, after all, a headline hunter like many bad politicians are, but I digress.

It’s likely that O’Rourke hoped this “mother f***er” moment would see him boosted in the polls. Coming off as a tough-as-nails manly man ready to brawl for the children is a perfect look for any candidate, but O’Rourke doesn’t exactly pull it off. Instead, he looked a bit try-hard, which is pretty par for O’Rourke’s course.

Sadly for O’Rourke, this move resulted in no shift for him in his numbers against Abbott. A Dallas Morning News-UT poll shows that the sitting governor maintains a comfortable seven-point lead over the wannabe:

According to a new poll from The Dallas Morning News and the University of Texas at Tyler, Abbott has a 7-point cushion over O’Rourke, unchanged from a similar survey in May.

The poll, conducted Aug. 1-7, surveyed 1,384 registered voters and has a margin of error of plus or minus 2.8 percentage points.

This has been pretty typical of this race for some time now. O’Rourke is consistently lagging behind Abbott by around six to seven points, meaning that O’Rourke’s stunt isn’t moving the needle. It seems none of them are, and as Ed Morrisey of Hot Air noted, a lot of this failure has to do with Texans trusting Abbott with the Texas economy and blaming Biden for the inflation.

Biden’s failing is rubbing off on other Democrats, especially those up for election. This makes O’Rourke an almost certain loser, but Republicans in Texas shouldn’t count their chickens before they hatch. The shifting dynamic in the population in Texas is undeniable and the creeping purple into the steady red makes Democrats a very real threat.

If O’Rourke was a better politician or even slightly more believable, Abbott would likely be under a real threat. A six to seven-point lead is okay at best in a state like Texas, and sometimes all it takes is one bad headline to shift undecided voters from one side to another.

Texas Republicans would do well to come out in full force come time to vote.
