Comedian Sarah Silverman has outraged everyone in the past, be it the right or the woke mob on the left. However, while many comedians have been sunk for the jokes they’ve told in the past, Silverman has gotten away with a lot and still has a career despite it all.
It’s something that Silverman attributes to her political leanings. According to Fox News, Silverman sat down for the “SmartLess” podcast hosted by Jason Bateman, Sean Hayes, and Will Arnett. During the interview she discussed the outrage she’s created and owed her surviving it all to a “liberal douchiness”:
The provocative Silverman has told jokes mocking everything from religion to rape throughout her career. She also wore blackface during a sketch from her 2007 TV show, “The Sarah Silverman Program”.
Hayes noted that Silverman avoided controversy over some of her edgier material, while other comedians would have landed in hot water with similar jokes.
“I think it’s the intention behind it… I always said the opposite of what I thought and that was the joke kind of, but hopefully the truth transcends that I don’t really feel this way,” she said.
“That comedy I did, you’re right, it was like, ‘Oh it’s OK because you know I don’t mean it,’” Silverman continued. “But then it also is kind of like, ‘We’re liberal, so we can say anything. We can say, you know, the words that are unsayable. You know I don’t mean it, so I can say it.’ There is kind of a liberal douchiness about it, I think, in retrospect. I mean, I don’t know, it’s a weird balance.”
The one thing she is wrong about is the fact that being “liberal” automatically means you don’t mean it. Leftists have displayed far more racism than the right has, especially in recent years. The idea that being of a political leaning releases you from any kind of bad intention is the height of hubris.
But perhaps that’s part of the “liberal douchiness” Silverman is referring to as well.
The truth is, the left wants as many cultural representatives as it can possibly get up on the main stage. Destroying one through cancel culture means not only admitting the left was wrong about something, it means having one less voice preaching their nonsense.
Silverman survives because her political leanings protect her, as she accurately deduced.
This isn’t just unfair, it also causes a lot of problems. It means that the arts will stagnate because only one side is allowed to speak up. It also paints anyone not of that ideological bent as racist, sexist, etc. when they’re far from it. Echo chambers form and people begin to feel like they’re right, even when they’re being very wrong.
White “comedian” Chelsea Handler is one such example. She literally told a black man he couldn’t show support for Trump in any way because he was black. That is absolutely racist, but the left will never speak up. Not when Handler is still getting appearances on major talk shows and getting a solid following on social media.
Being a leftist clearly gives you a pass. Perhaps at some point, Silverman’s honesty will morph into a full-blown realization from many on the left that they are actually the thing they hate.
