Fox News host Tucker Carlson had some choice words for Walmart and its newfound anti-gun soapbox that has its CEO urging the government to push for more regulations on firearms.
Walmart CEO Doug McMillon recently released a statement saying that Walmart would no longer sell handguns in its stores and calling for the issue of banning semi-automatic rifles to be reopened.
Carlson noted the interesting timing of this. As the left is geared up to punish any corporation that doesn’t jibe with its narrative, Walmart suddenly becomes “woke” and the left, which until this point had always hated Walmart with a passion, is suddenly happy with the retail giant.
“That’s a fascinating turnaround,” said Carlson. “For years, you’ll remember, Walmart was the target of coordinated attacks from the left. Progressives accused the company of destroying small towns, and of exploiting workers. Walmart hired PR consultants and union busters to push back for years.”
Carlson noted that Walmart hasn’t changed its business tactics but that the left has now stopped attacking it.
“Walmart figured out it could buy immunity from criticism by mouthing left-wing pieties,” said Carlson. “That’s all it takes. Sounding woke, and they’ll leave you alone.”
He wasn’t done, though.
Carlson noted that Walmart didn’t plan on disposing of the remainder of its ammo, and in fact planned on continuing to sell it until it was gone. This is indicative of the fact that they don’t truly believe what they’re saying, and are still concerned about their bottom line, which is what all this is about in the first place.
The Fox News host then went into how Walmart’s business practices are actually damaging to the American economy, citing one study that showed that over a 12-year span, Walmart actually cost America 400,000 jobs thanks to sending manufacturing business overseas to China:
None of this was an accident. At times, Walmart sold goods at a loss, just long enough to drive American competitors out of business completely. Smaller retail shops and the jobs they provided vanished. Suddenly, in many places, Walmart was one of the few remaining employers. One and a half million Americans now work there at any given time. It’s definitely not an improvement over what we had before.
In 2005, 20 percent of Walmart employees worked part-time. Today, the majority do. It’s the simple cruelty of math: If Walmart keeps employees’ hours low enough, it can avoid paying benefits. Can people really live like that? Not for long.
Carlson finished with a verbal uppercut by highlighting their gross hypocrisy.
“The company more responsible than any other for destroying and degrading rural America — for making our towns uglier and cheaper and poorer — the same people who push the appalling lie that brightly-colored plastic crap from China is going to make us happy — that company is now lecturing normal Americans — the very Americans they’ve hurt so badly— about how immoral they are for daring to protect themselves with firearms. And everyone in Washington, New York, and LA is applauding them as they do it. It’s not a good sign.”
