I hesitate to call this piece a “fact-check,” only because of the sorry nature of that wing of our journalism complex. The fact-checkers in our press have revealed themselves to be a partisan outfit, designed to pretend they are the final word on the truth, all while they slant, massage, contort, and bend the facts to fit a prescribed agenda.

This has been the case throughout the Biden term, as they have found him to not have told as many lies as Donald Trump on the simple basis that his lies are constantly recalibrated. Biden delivers “misleading comments,” “embellishing narratives,” or “he lacks context” when he is patently false, for example. 

When the New York Times got around to addressing Biden’s mythical history woven in his speeches (he was an Irish lad who grew up in a Polish and/or Italian neighborhood among the residents in a Greek community--while attending black churches and Jewish synagogues as he was raised Puerto Rican), they managed to describe the president as “Our Storyteller In Chief.” When Glenn Kessler addressed the numerous falsehoods Biden tells, he compiled a list of euphemisms in his assessment – while the word “lies” never was brought up.

So yes, I hesitate to be lumped in with this dysfunctional crowd of truth-averse “fact”-checkers. Nonetheless, I will do the job they will not, and look at the numerous lies on display at the Democratic National Convention on Night 1. There’s a lot to unpack, so let’s dig in.

Ignoring the Patient in the Room

One theme of the night involved glossing over the reality that Joe Biden has been pushed out by party leadership. It led to a night of unintentional conflicts. One involves Minnesota Lieutenant Governor Peggy Flanagan, who saw fit to include that her name in the Native American Ojibwe language is Ejee Wei-Woddam Ukwe, which translates in English as “Speaks with a clear and loud voice woman.” Then she paused for proper applause for--I dunno--being from a checkbox group? She then declared she is also from the White Earth Nation and a member of the Wolf Clan.

(I’m going to try this out in the tavern tonight; I’ll step in and announce that my name in my native Dutch translates to “Butcher,” and thus I am from the Rare Steak Sodality – and then I’ll absorb the applause from the patrons.)

Flanagan announced that the motto from her wolf clan is that “we leave no person behind,” which is why she is lending her support to Kamala Harris! And…in doing so you are leaving behind Joe Biden, who was tossed to the curb with the recyclables, Peggy.

Hillary

Hillary Clinton also made a shrill appearance, and she, too, fell prey to this contradiction. In her praise of Biden, she had to bypass that he was eliminated for lacking the very thing she touted. Oh well, I’m sure few noticed…

LAWFARE

In an effort to boost someone the Dems feel is a rising star, Michigan state Senator Mallory McMorrow took the stage; she had this oblivious claim: “Donald Trump would be able to weaponize the Department of Justice to go after his political opponents! He could even turn the FBI into his own personal police force!” Moving past the evidence of the FBI working against Trump as he rose to power, what this budding starlet fell prey to was bald projection, as she essentially described what Biden has been doing:

Marriage and JD Vance

Kentucky Governor Andy Beshear has been designated as a dedicated critic of JD Vance given the shared statehood of Vance's family background. Beshear at the podium declared, “JD Vance says women should stay in violent marriages!” Yeah, sorry, Andy - we’re going to need a direct quote on that one, please.

Election Denial

What can be more obtuse than having 2016 election denialist Jamie Raskin coming out to complain about Trump denying election results? And having Jamie deny the 2016 result as he does so:

Injecting Bleach

Rep. Robert Garcia shamelessly repeated the farcical claim that Trump told people to inject bleach during the pandemic. This sophomoric display was enough to even compel Politifact to come out and address the idiocy.

Job Loss

Dick Durbin was out there, bleating about how Trump was “[o]ne of only two presidents to leave office with fewer Americans working than when he started.” Like so many of the critical claims throughout the night, this was never framed in the context of the pandemic. In truth, Trump had built up a net gain of 6.7 million jobs before the total shutdown of the country. This created a net loss of over two million jobs as he left office, and the reopening of the country and the return of workers gets credited to Biden as “jobs created.” Convenient how that works out.

Child Tax Credit

Rep. Joyce Beatty of Ohio made the weak claim that JD Vance bailed out on her state. (Vance graduated from Ohio State in two years and then “bailed” to go to Yale Law.) She also touted the child tax plan as something the president and VP worked on together. “Joe and Kamala have been expanding the child tax plan, and let me just tell you - cutting the poverty rate for children!” 

Except…

That is old news. Their plan went into effect in 2021 as a pandemic response benefit, but it had a one-year sundown. After expiring, the child poverty rate returned to the same levels from 2019. 

[Eventually, Joe Biden shuffled on stage; President Silveralert launched into a shout-fest of a speech that carried all the markings of a “You kids don’t know how good you have it!” lecture.]

Charlottesville Hoax

Yes, he is still trotting out this tired canard that has been debunked since 2018.

“Suckers & Losers”

Well, if Biden is resorting to all of his tired claims, he must have gone with the provably false quote about fallen soldiers as well, right? Yes…yes he did:

The Border

There is no way that Biden can claim the upper hand on this issue, and yet there he was, doing just that. He said Trump blocked a new border bill in the Senate (while a tougher and effective House bill sits on Chuck Schumer’s desk), and he even tried to sell us on the fable that there are fewer border crossing than when Trump was in office. Joe stripped away Trump border restrictions, and he ushered in record numbers of illegal crossings. It cannot even be debated. How this even made onto his teleprompter is a mystery.

Crime

Biden delivers this snake oil claim that murders and violent crimes are at historic lows. There is no policy of his he can point to for this, but the result is due to a particular detail; crime statistics are at historic lows. The FBI rolled out a new tabulation system years ago, and there have been problems with many police departments being able to report their results in a proper fashion. The result – numerous major cities have been unable to report their crime data. Well, say, what do you know? When places like Los Angeles do not report their crimes, then nationwide crime statics are lower!

EV Charging Stations

That he so brazenly brags about this boondoggle shows how little Democrats care about the facts:

“Trump Left Europe In Tatters”

It really is not clear what Biden means by this, nor how Trump is somehow responsible for whatever happened. But last we checked in the Encyclopedia Britanica, Ukraine is situated in Europe, and the tattered condition of that country is partially a result of Biden’s inactivity over the Russian invasion.

Schools Opening

Yet more proof that this party has no qualms telling fiction to their people, knowing there will be no accountability. Biden claims he and Kamala were the ones who opened up schools, when we all can remember with clarity it was the Democrats, the media, and the teachers unions that fought ardently to keep kids out of school and demonized Trump, Ron DeSantis, and other Republicans for daring to open schools earlier:

This was Monday night’s opening of the Democratic National Convention, and they set the stage for a night of falsehoods, myths, and  - dare we say it - lies. Throughout the night they spent plenty of time praising Joe Biden for his selfless act of stepping away for the good of our democracy and the preservation of our nation.

They - and we - know full well Biden basically left fingernail gouges in the doorframes, as the power brokers of his party were carting him out, forcibly removing him from the ballot. That they try selling us on the idea that he made history with his magnanimous decision to willingly step back in order to preserve the sanctity of our society was the massive lie that hung like a pall over the convention floor last night.
