Quite an exciting weekend with a number of tight contests and some significant upsets. Even a number of teams that won as expected struggled in close contests. Some of the top 10 were affected, and others throughout the poll saw things shaking up. Here are the notable contests and the new rankings.
(5) Oklahoma 34 - (9) Texas 30
The Red River Rivalry did not disappoint as it was another thriller. After a sluggish first quarter, both teams turned up the offense as they combined for over 1,000 yards gained. Texas tied things with a 30-yard touchdown run late in the fourth quarter and then took a lead on a field goal with 1:17 remaining. But that was plenty of time for QB Dillion Gabriel to work an efficient drive and hit Nic Anderson in the corner of the end zone for the win.
(10) USC 43 - Arizona 41 / 3OT
In a surprising battle for the Trojans at home, they fell behind 17-0 and fought to remain close all game. Defending Heisman winner Caleb Williams had an uncharacteristically rough first half but brought his squad back with his usual stellar play. The final score was capped off with Williams scrambling for the 2-point conversion, then the defense got the needed stop after an Arizona touchdown in triple overtime.
(14) Louisville 33 - (21) Notre Dame 20
The paper tiger nature of Notre Dame may be exposed as the undefeated Cardinals handled the Irish well. After keeping things close, Louisville controlled the second half of the game, holding ND to only 44 rushing yards total and walking away with three scores in the final quarter.
Georgia Tech 23 - (25) Miami 20
Just some brutal execution by UM late in the game led to a collapse. The Hurricanes held a 3-point lead with less than a minute to play, but rather than taking a knee to run out the clock, they called a running play, resulting in a contested fumble. The Yellowjackets managed to go 75 yards in just 24 seconds, as receiver Christian Leary got behind the secondary and caught a 44-yard touchdown with 2 seconds remaining.
(11) Alabama 26 - Texas A&M 20
The Crimson Tide trailed by a touchdown at the half but came out with two touchdown throws from Jalen Milroe to Jermaine Burton, who finished just shy of 200 receiving yards. Alabama’s defense went on lockdown mode as it held the Aggies to just a late field goal in the second half.
