You probably have encountered a few accounts on social media sporting an emoji of a curling tube of water. This would be an indicator they are a left-of-center, possibly of the resistance, but certainly actively rooting for a Democrat uprising in the upcoming midterm election. Voters, and many members of our unbiased media have been anticipating the rise of a Blue Wave this November.
It is revealing that this supposed grassroots predicted upheaval has not translated to party support in the form of political donations. While many may want the Blue Wave to become a reality the DNC is experiencing support in the form of a green trickle, according to a Propublica report on the party filings.
With each recent election the press has been eagerly seeking out evidence that this midterm tsunami is inevitable. In Wisconsin liberal judge Rebecca Dallet won a State Supreme Court seat, supposedly a warning shot to the GOP. In Florida a number of State House seats may be flipping, supposedly a sign the always contentious state is “suddenly” in play. And in Texas Beto O’Rourke has become a national punchline as the media insists on trotting him out to be the one to unseat Ted Cruz in the Senate.
Most of these examples however are more wishcasting than rooted in analytical proof. There may be a reef of reality blocking this anticipated upswell of Democrat opposition. Propublica has reported that based on the filings of the two parties the Democrats have received an unimpressive amount of financial backing.
In April the Democrats raised $7.8 million, representing the lowest midterm collection for that month since 2006. They outspent that amount, recording $8.3 million in expenditures, and racking up its debt figure to $5.3 million. This does not exactly reflect on an electorate hungry to unseat and create a tidal shift, politically.
Further indication of challenges to this were seen in a variety of recent primary elections where the GOP held seats. This willful overlooking, in order to focus on the results that support the talking-point, shows a level of delusion may be in play. One other indicator of the Wave resembling something less than a high tide water level can be seen on the other side of the ledger.
The Republicans are hardly a dispirited voting block, as they are collecting donations at a record clip. For the same month of April the RNC collected $13 million, and also sees a wide discrepancy of cash on hand. The GOP shows over $43 million cash on hand, while the DNC is sitting on only $8.7 million in the bank.

While these figures are not exclusive indicators, it seems that all the talk and expectation of a Blue Wave happening is so far not reflected in action taken by the supporters.
