It’s official. According to a new letter from Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy, a vote to recall Rep. Liz Cheney from leadership will happen as soon as Wednesday. This follows several weeks of infighting whereby Cheney has sought to use outlets like The Washington Post to bolster her case. Now, House Republicans seem to be fed up, and many who voted to keep her in her position just a few months ago following her impeachment vote are now keen to move forward without Cheney in the lead.

I don’t think McCarthy would risk the party being embarrassed a second time by seeing Cheney survive another vote. Given that, my assumption is that this means he knows he’s got the votes to recall her. McCarthy has already endorsed Rep. Elise Stefanik, a controversial choice given her lackluster voting record, to replace Cheney. That seems likely to happen as well.

In reaction to the news, Sen. Mitt Romney offered this response.

Actually, I’m fairly confident that it will gain the GOP additional voters if it allows the caucus to move beyond relitigating January 6th and the 2020 election in the left-wing press almost every day. Regardless of how one feels about those events, continuing to play into the goal of a biased media to destroy Republicans with such divisive obsessions is an idiotic strategy. That’s why House Republicans have said enough is enough in regards to Cheney. It’s not just that she doesn’t like Donald Trump – neither does Kevin McCarthy last I checked. Rather, it’s about Cheney’s selfish insistence on promoting herself instead of doing her job to ensure victory in 2022.

As to whether this will cost Republicans votes, the answer is almost certainly not. No one is going to be talking about Liz Cheney in 2022, and anyone who would base their vote on her previous ouster from leadership was never going to vote for a Republican anyway.
