A video of a woman grabbing a carton of Blue Bell out of the freezer, licking it, and putting it back went viral last week. It was one of several videos showing what appear to be teenagers or college-aged students that have made the rounds on the internet.
Here’s the original.

She’s not going to be laughing anymore.
Apparently, police have identified her and are just doing the final box checking before they bring her in. This per NBC News.
Police said on Wednesday they believed they had identified the suspect after “detectives had obtained surveillance video placing a woman matching the suspect description in the Lufkin store on June 28 around 11 p.m.” They are waiting to finally verify her identity before issuing an arrest warrant.
Worse for the young woman, it looks like she’s going to be facing far more serious charges than she’d likely imagine.
She could face a second-degree felony charge of tampering with a consumer product, the Lufkin police department said in an email statement to NBC News. The charge comes with a two- to 20-year prison term and up to $10,000 in fines, according to Texas state penal code.
Investigators are also in discussions with the FDA and additional federal charges could be made.
Even the minimums in this case are no joke. While it may seem a bit overboard to some, there are reasons prison time and a large fine are part of the punishment in this case. Because the video didn’t make clear where this happened, stores were forced to remove all Blue Bell cartons of that size and possible flavor across the state of Texas. The investigation into this went all the way from San Antonio to Houston.
Food tampering, especially used to produce a viral video, is serious given the public health risks and I expect that this woman will be made an example of. There’s also another person in the video who’s telling her to lick it who also will need to be investigated.
I don’t suspect she’ll get 20 years, but any serious time in jail here will serve as a strong deterrent to this silly trend.
