He was calling for a new global order last night, ranting about mysterious right-wing oligarchs. Today, he’s saying that felons should be able to vote. No, not after they get out and meet certain thresholds. He wants them voting from prison.
Vermont Independent Sen. Bernie Sanders said felons should be allowed to vote while in prison, while on the campaign trail Saturday in Iowa.
“I think that is absolutely the direction we should go,” Sanders said at a town hall in Iowa, according to the Des Moines Register.
“In my state, what we do is separate. You’re paying a price, you committed a crime, you’re in jail. That’s bad,” the Democratic presidential candidate said. “But you’re still living in American society and you have a right to vote.
No, they don’t still have the right to vote.
From the founding of this nation, it has been understood in every state that committing a felony means you make the conscious chose to forfeit certain rights. That’s never been in question. The idea that people who have actively broken laws should be able to vote on those laws (via representation) is nonsensical on it’s face. It’s also a bad idea from a practical standpoint, given that many in prison have simply not shown themselves to be worthy of sharing in society. Why should a murderer in a prison be able to negatively affect a single mother via their policy desires? I don’t think there are too many people who’d think that’s acceptable because it’s a ludicrous proposition.
Also, I wonder if Bernie has the same view about other rights? Should felons be allowed to buy guns after their sentence? How about while they are still in prison? I mean, they still have the right to bear arms, correct? At least according to Bernie’s logic. He’d no doubt vehemently oppose the restoration of that right to felons. Who needs consistency?
This is all simply a transparent attempt to garner more liberal voters. Because prisons are heavily minority populated, they assume that’s another big voting block for them. It’s a cynical, unconstitutional ploy, namely because the federal government has no right under the 14th amendment to force states to let felons vote.
The Democratic party is playing for keeps when it comes to overwhelming Republican voters. They want 16 year old voting, they want massive amnesties to illegals so they can vote, and now they want felons voting while still behind bars. Whoever they think can help give them power, they want voting. The GOP better recognize the onslaught they are facing and realize that caving on any of these points will simply lead to their electoral extinction.
