Remember Joe Lieberman? He was one of the last Democratic centrists. Although I wouldn’t have voted for Al Gore as president in 2000 if you’d hit me with a wet noodle, the fact a then-Democrat Connecticut senator (who later became an Independent before his 2013 retirement) was his running mate speaks volumes. Now that the Dems have veered wildly to the left and gone all in on their “progressive” agenda, realists like Lieberman have been left in the dust. 

But he’s still speaking out, to his credit. The first Jewish-American to appear on a presidential ticket lashed out at Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer's (D-NY) election-meddling speech from the Senate, where last Thursday he advocated for regime change in another democratic country – Israel.

Lieberman, like many, was appalled:

“I thought the statement he made this week … was a mistake. I can’t ever remember anything like it,” Lieberman told host John Catsimatidis on the “Cats Roundtable” on WABC 770 AM.

“For a US senator — let alone the majority leader; let alone the highest-ranking Jewish elected official in Washington — to tell Israel that it’s time to get rid of Netanyahu, that’s outrageous,” Lieberman said of Schumer.

"Can you imagine... anybody... in the US government saying to the Brits, ‘We don’t like your prime minister. It’s really time for you to dump him.’ Oh my god, there’d be outrage all around."

Lieberman added:

“It’s a bad precedent for us to tell a friend and ally, a democratic ally, ‘Get rid of this government. we don’t like him,’ ” [sic] the former senator said.

Israeli PM Benjamin Netanyahu also blasted Schumer's interference:

“I think what he said is totally inappropriate. It’s inappropriate for him to go to a sister democracy and try to replace the elected leadership there,” Netanyahu said on CNN’s “State of the Union” on Sunday.

“That’s something that [the] Israeli public does on its own. We’re not a banana republic.”

Chuck Schumer has a history of incendiary rhetoric, and the press rarely calls him out for it. He infamously called for violence against Supreme Court Justices in 2020 when he railed against their abortion stances:

Schumer has been in the Senate since 1999 and clearly seems to think he can say whatever he wants, regardless of the dangers to international security. Although he himself is Jewish, he clearly threw Israel under the bus when he demanded Netanyahu’s ouster—even though a majority of Israelis approve of the PM's efforts to extinguish Hamas.

Joe Lieberman may not be at the top of the news cycle anymore, but he seems to represent the last of the decent, logical Democrats who have all but disappeared from the political landscape. He’s right to call out the divisive Schumer, who has no business meddling in the affairs of another sovereign state.

Chuck Schumer is an absolute disgrace, and Lieberman had the guts to call him out on it.
