Rob Reiner's documentary exposing the threat of so-called "Christian nationalism" is already proving to be a box office bomb.

"God & Country," which was released earlier this month, brought in an underwhelming $38,000 on its opening weekend despite an avalanche of free press and positive reviews from left-wing critics. 

Reiner, whose brain has effectively been fried by a severe case of Trump Derangement Syndrome, worked as a producer on the film that explores the supposed threat of right-wing Christian fundamentalism in American politics.

The film describes itself as follows: 

GOD & COUNTRY looks at the implications of Christian Nationalism and how it distorts not only our constitutional republic, but Christianity itself. Featuring prominent Christian thought leaders, GOD & COUNTRY asks this question: What happens when a faith built on love, sacrifice, and forgiveness grows political tentacles, conflating power, money, and belief into hyper-nationalism?

Despite the poor box office showing, the film has overwhelmingly positive reviews from critics, the majority of whom share Reiner's politics and consider its message as vitally important.

"The film’s insights about the role of religion in politics feel especially well-informed because many of its commentators draw on their own personal and professional experiences with the Christian church," wrote Nicolas Rapold over at The New York Times. "They’re believers, too, and they’re worried."

"Polemics aside, this very worthy, frightening and effective documentary is an illuminating explanation of the who, the what and the why of this national trend towards an increasingly right wing ideology," added Neely Swanson for Easy Reader. 

Only two verified audience members have shared their views on Rotten Tomatoes, both of whom liked the film. Yet the fact there are just two reviews perhaps indicates just how few people have seen the film in the first place. 

Despite the film's poor box office showing, Deadline attempted to run cover for its lack of success by pointing out that tickets were cheaper than normal film prices and claiming that the majority of churches support the film's message:

God & Country has been met with an unbelievable amount of support from churches and religious organizations across the country that are keen to spread the film’s message. We expect group sales and buyouts to surge as word-of-mouth takes hold and we head deeper in the 2024 general election. In our minds, this was more an opening salvo than an opening weekend.

It is indeed possible that the film may pick up a greater audience as Democrats fearmonger ahead of the presidential election later this year. Yet it appears for now that Reiner has failed to create the magic of his past successes, including "This is Spinal Tap" (1984) and "Stand By Me" (1986).
