Why let private businesses offer what they please when the government can force them to serve what they’d like? I guess that’s what Los Angeles city councilman Paul Koretz was wondering when he proposed a city law that would require all restaurants to offer a vegan protein option.
Fox News reports that the city law would require that “movie theaters, sports stadiums, the Los Angeles Zoo, Los Angeles International Airport restaurants and other large-scale entertainment venues to sell at least one vegan protein option.”
Koretz said:
There’s really no downside to it. The change could easily be made in any venue. A movie theater serves hot dogs. They can serve vegan dogs. It’s easy.
There is one downside that he didn’t seem to consider. Businesses should serve whatever they want, and people can choose to go there or not to go there. That’s the beauty of the free market. I guess forcing people to do your bidding is cool*, too.
Koretz says he wants this change in order to combat climate change, and PETA is on board. Obviously. Ben Williamson, senior international media director for PETA said:
Vegan eating is booming, but good laws like this do not come soon enough. Natural disasters such as the wildfires that this great city recently suffered are a terrible reminder that we must do more to protect our planet and its inhabitants. Animal agriculture is one of the most, if not they most, significant contributor to the world’s very serious environmental problems.
They’re gonna save the world by taking away freedom, everybody. Heroes.
*It’s not. Somebody tell California.
