There's big dough in baking, but not if you're paler than a pastry. So goes the situation for an upcoming cooking competition.
According to its website, the King Arthur Baking Company -- formerly King Arthur Flour -- was established in 1790. "From Martha Washington's apple pie through the invention of the chocolate chip cookie, from flour in wooden barrels to bags at the supermarket," the site celebrates, "we've been there."
But don't accuse them of being old-fashioned. The company boasts that it's "100 percent employee-owned." Enlightened activism is baked in, and King Arthur has apparently observed that some Americans lack the freedom to put bread in the oven and wait. Hence, from its Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion announcement:
[W]e believe everyone deserves equal access to the joy of baking. To maintain and continue our history of putting community, our employee-owners, and the planet first, we must also address the social injustices that challenge these values.

King Arthur is so contemporary, it's glommed onto the hot fad of unnecessarily pluralizing words:
In June of 2020, we made a promise to become...more effective partners to those who experience injustice and marginalization in our country. This began with establishing a new DEI fund, conducting internal trainings and forming a DEI Team, examining hiring practices, and diversifying our content and voices. ... We will continue to hold ourselves accountable to our intentions and promises...
As part of that promise, the company is promoting a cash-offering contest -- Baking Pitchfest 2024. From the ad for the event, "for bakeries in the Northeast and Washington state":
[F]inalists will compete in a virtual event for a chance to win financial support to build their business.
As for participatory prerequisites, a Project Potluck membership is required (sign-up is free). Each entrant must additionally be a:
- Current King Arthur Baking customer
- Person of Color-led bakery
Per PotluckCPG.org, Project Potluck "is the largest professional community...for People of Color...in Consumer Packaged Goods (CPG)."
The Project offers mentorship, special events, and education. It also protects members from the CPG world's Caucasian-created danger:
Connect in a SAFE space with peers, founders, advisors, and decision-makers who are eager to share their experiences and support.
Teaming together, Potluck and King Arthur are keen to cook up some equity. And by excluding white people, they'll confect inclusivity. More from the ad:
Half mentorship, half competition, Baking Pitchfest is an accelerator program designed to foster greater inclusivity and creativity in the baking world by providing equitable opportunities for People-of-Color entrepreneurs.
We're living in an age of correction. Institutions have eyed an imbalance, and they're determined to tilt the scales of genetic justice:

Baking Pitchfest also features a product portion. Melanin-appropriate finalists will "travel to Vermont for a two-day event to pitch their product idea in the hopes to win a purchase order in the King Arthur product portfolios. "
The ad was posted by X account Libs of TikTok. Resultantly, a kettle of comments baked King Arthur.
The competition's application window closes February 11th. The winning bakery will reportedly receive $10,000.
Like mushy dough into crispy croutons, America is being transformed -- into an upside-down cake. "Inclusivity" is now founded upon the principle of exclusion; and in 2024, a baking contest bans crackers.
