On Monday, Joe Biden said he doesn’t consider drunk driving a felony.
He’s not wholly at odds with the legal system, according to duianswer.com:
For the most part, a first time DUI offense is charged as a misdemeanor, not a felony. There are some exceptions to this rule. For example, if a drunk driving accident caused someone to be injured, the charge against the driver could be raised to a felony. If someone dies as the result of a drunk driving accident, the driver could be charged with reckless homicide or a similar offense.
But Joe wasn’t just dipping his toes into the topic for fun; he was making clear that illegal immigrants arrested for drunk driving shouldn’t be deported.
He dropped the decree during an election forum with Vice News.
And if he’s elected, he’ll issue an executive order preventing ICE from taking people who commit the Double D across the border.
But he definitely wants to hold someone accountable — the Immigration and Customs Enforcement agency:
“I would hold ICE agents accountable if in fact they stepped over my executive orders, which is no arrest of any kind outside of the schools. You know, look at the — one of the things that’s happening is, particularly for the Latino and Hispanic kids, is the incredible pressure on them in terms of their sense of security.”
He’s not above seeing those here illegally returned to their home country, but it’s gotta be a felony; and that won’t be including cruising tanked:
“You change the culture by saying, ‘You’re gonna get fired.’ ‘You’re fired,’ if in fact you do that. You only arrest for the purpose of dealing with a felony that’s committed, and I don’t consider drunk driving as a felony.”
Putting aside whether some incidents of drunk driving should be considered misdemeanors, it seems to me we’ve reached a strange point when a presidential candidate is low-balling the consequence of getting behind the wheel of a car sloshed.
As pointed out by The Daily Caller, a lot of bad things happen:
10,497 people died in drunk driving related car accidents in 2016, according to the Center for Disease Control, which accounts for 28% of all traffic-related deaths in the U.S. States issue a variety of different penalties for drunk driving, ranging from fines to jail time to license suspension.
Is this a place where Joe wants to plant his flag? Is this the hill he wants to stand on?
How will women’s groups react — what about Mothers Against Drunk Driving?
I guess we’ll see how it plays out.
What do you think it’s gonna do for his nominee Q?
