Among others in the House, Reps. Ilhan Omar and Rashida Tlaib are all about the BDS movement — that would be, “Boycott, Divestment, Sanctions.”
Because, among others in the House, Reps. Ilhan Omar and Rashida Tlaib think Israel is about as cool as disco was in the mid-’80s.
That would be NOT totally awesome.
So the idea: cut off Israel economically. Strangle the country.
What to do, then, when the House faces a measure to denounce the anti-Semitic bandwagon?
Pelosi may very soon find herself in a precarious situation, as a group led by House Judiciary Chairman Jerry Nadler is pitching just such a thing.
From Politico:
House Judiciary Chairman Jerry Nadler (D-N.Y.) and Rep. Brad Schneider (D-Ill.) introduced a resolution Thursday that denounces boycotting efforts as “incompatible” with the official U.S. stance on a two-state solution to end the long-running Israeli-Palestinian conflict.
In a letter to colleagues Thursday, Nadler and Schneider described the global attempt to economically isolate Israel as an “overly-simplistic and one-sided approach.”
“Its goal is Israel’s elimination, not the criticism of any particular policy of Israel,” they wrote of the Global Boycott, Divestment, and Sanctions movement, or BDS, which has been cheered by some outside progressive groups.
It’s certainly been cheered by Ilhan and Rashida.
As reported by The Daily Wire:
Omar has regularly expressed support for BDS since being elected, though she claimed on the campaign trail that she had no love for the movement. Haaretz reported, shortly after Omar’s election, that a spokesperson with her campaign told a website called “MuslimGirl” that Omar fully backed BDS, and that “she has fought to make sure people’s right to support it isn’t criminalized.”
With Regard to Rashida, check out this Twitter chain:
U.S. Senate's first bill, in midst of shutdown, is a bipartisan defense of the Israeli government from boycotts https://t.co/KPL79eh1rg by @ryangrim @ggreenwald

It’s absurd that the first bill during the shutdown is legislation which punishes Americans who exercise their constitutional right to engage in political activity. Democrats must block consideration of any bills that don’t reopen the government. Let's get our priorities right. https://t.co/rHvpBHtHI5

They forgot what country they represent. This is the U.S. where boycotting is a right & part of our historical fight for freedom & equality. Maybe a refresher on our U.S. Constitution is in order, then get back to opening up our government instead of taking our rights away. https://t.co/KkmqjR58ZM

It’s getting interesting: Reportedly, Ilhan — whose outspoken supporter Linda Sarsour endorses Sharia law and fears “humanizing” Jews (here and here) — is in danger of being replaced by her own party in the next round of lever-pulls (here). And Rashida — who’s certainly been vocal about aid to Israel (here) — wasn’t in favor of Pelosi being made Speaker (here). Pelosi could soon return the favor of lack of favor.
The Democratic Party has some issues; for some, it’s BDS. For others, TDS.
Maybe they’ll get it all straightened out. But for now, across the ideological aisle, it seems like IBS — there’s lots of crap.
