I recently wrote this post about the NIH, aided by Rep. Tom Cole and other Republicans, blowing great wads of your tax dollars (and mine!) on studies to “determine” that male rats like ejaculating, and to “learn” that monkeys on cocaine behave like… everyone else on cocaine.
If you thought that was cool and awesome, though, just wait for what President Obama and the NIH have in store next. That’s right: Evidently, they want to spend even more of your money (and mine!) on this stuff. From the NIH director’s recent congressional testimony on the FY 2017 budget:
“To this end, the President’s FY 2017 budget request for the NIH is $33.136 billion, $825 million or 2.5 percent above the enacted FY 2016 level. This budget request reflects the President’s and the Secretary’s commitment to improving the health of the nation and to maintaining our nation’s leadership in the life sciences.”
Yep, nothing says “maintaining our nation’s leadership in the life sciences” quite like blowing taxpayer cash on horny, cracked-out rats, amirite????
Look, there is undoubtedly useful stuff NIH does. But they really need to get rid of the line items pertaining to obvious waste like this before they come asking congressional appropriators—who, frankly, are unlikely to ever tell them “no,” at least as it stands—for more money. They’re as addicted to taxpayer dollars as monkeys are to cocaine… and there’s studies to prove it!
